Soooooo....are there pangas like most places..or is renting a boat to make the few miles out easier? ........I will Google limits..seasons etc but if anyone knew off the top of their heads about that i would appreciate that data as well....I'm going down with 3 guns..110 to 140 and hope to have some fun......Thanks again for any help and I will be sure to post a solid report when the trip is over....fish or no fish

Side note...I'm a huge foodie...Janky, hole in the wall food spot ideas are also welcome

Re: Belize help

I've been to Belize twice but only speared one day off San Pedro in November. Was with a bunch of buddies with zero experience so we did some shallow water action several miles north of SP first and then a deeper spot close to the reef.

The shallow water action is a waste of time. it's calmer but there are very few large fish and a lot of annoying nurse sharks. the bigger fish are easily spooked and it was hard to get close in the clear water. i shot some small reefies and had nurse sharks all up in my face (literally) minutes later. had to jab them away

the reef dive was better and worse. you need to go where there are cuts in the reef. the big fish come through these cuts from open water to get into the shallow, protected side of the reef. it was better because i did see several big fish in a fairly short 40 minute dive. it was worse because the day we went was nearly a tropical storm, the current was ripping and i literally almost got sucked onto the reef and the crashing waves. i swam for my life for 20 minutes straight to beat the ocean and make it back to my boat. at one point i almost gave up and called for help.

if you get good weather, and pray that you do, those reef cuts would be spectacular. there is a lot of coral to hold onto if the current is moving you too much. and it was only about 20 feet deep. in my case it was hopeless. but i would definitely go back and give it another go.

I chartered GoFish Belize. I would NOT recommend them. I would blast out emails to the top rated outfitters on Tripadvisor (San pedro, Activites) and see if they have captains that will take you out. I doubt you can just grab a panga, there just aren't that many spearos in belize to create that market, as far as i could tell in two trips down there.

not sure about limits and seasons. the only info i could find after much study was that you can't take fish in the preserves and you can't take the catch and release fish for H&L guys. not that there was any sort of Fish and Game presence btw.

Re: Belize help

I went to ambergris caye a couple years ago. The hot thing then was to grab a three prong on scuba, blast lion fish, and feed them to the nurse sharks. From what I remember, it was pole spear/sling only, but I may be wrong. Finding a smaller operation may be your best bet. The larger providers may not want their other clientele to see spearing.

Also, there's a great lobster burrito place. Waruguma. One lobster in the burrito, one lobster on top of the burrito, and another in chunks around the burrito.

You called it. The best diving is in the cuts in the reef. San Pedro is pretty crowded and I haven't dived there for years but there are some nice cuts especially farther north.

Best if you get a trustworthy boatman that can drop you and let you drift in or out whatever the tide is doing. Local knowledge helps because those cuts have little holes and "houses" in them where black grouper and snappers hide.

I would guess the snappers up there are pretty "educated". Drop down and hide on the bottom if you see any. There is usually a resident school of dog snappers in many of the cuts down here.

Good luck.
