Lion Fish College Project - Help Needed
This is way off topic, but being a spearo i figured this was the best place to ask. I have to do a mini thesis in biology and conduct an experiment in marine biology in order to graduate from my program. I would like to do it on the population of lion fish in my area (clearwater) but i havent seen any lately. im just wondering if any of you have seen a large population of them in one area that i could use in my study. Help a fellow Spearo graduate! let me know.

Re: Lion Fish
Hmmm.....that may be the case in other places too which is VERY strange.
You would think there would be less food out deeper. Anybody else seeing that happen? I will move this thread to the Invasive species forum and expand the title as I think that may yeild more responses for the OP. |

Re: Lion Fish College Project - Help Needed
Ive heard of people pulling them up at 1500 feet. I went out 50 miles speafishing in the gulf yesterday and only saw one that was the size of a gatorade bottle. I imagine they go deeper as they mature.

In addition to Keys, I saw four in 60ft out of Ft Pierce last weekend.
Of course, those 4 aren't available anymore... |

Re: Lion Fish College Project - Help Needed
I dive west palm and Jupiter a lot and if I want a place where I KNOW that I'll get a lot of lionfish, that would be off of the deep ledges in Jupiter. At anywhere between 80-140', if I go there and don't come up with at least 5 on my stringer (even with a strong current) its a weird day. Good size ones too. I've dropped down onto ledges around 130' and have come upon small schools of 5-10 of them before just chilling in a 10 square foot area of ledges
I have yet to see any other place in west palm/jupiter as populated as those deep ledges. |
