Re: Diver Lost at Breezy Point

He left float on the jetty. At the time of diving it was high tide, so if something happened he would be swept to direction of Staten Island or Jersey.

Re: Diver Lost at Breezy Point

Reached out to the fishing community in that area via another forum. Hopefully I can get some guys to lend their boats to help.

Re: Diver Lost at Breezy Point

I dove with Eugene 2 weeks ago he is a great guy and a good diver.

Thoughts and prayers go out to his family, and his dive buddies Eugene and Yuri.

Dive safe guys, Eugene gave us all a scare once off Rockaway reef where we waited on the boat for half hour to see him. We finally spotted him from afar with 7 fish and a pair of binoculars he had found grinning from ear to ear. Prayers and Thoughts buddy

Re: Diver Lost at Breezy Point

For those who will dive off Breezy Point anyways, please remember, there are extremely strong currents out there, colliding at the tip they create whirlpools that can kill even strongest swimmer. Another hazard is boat traffic. Boaters in that area usually oblivious to any display of dive flag. Accidents has happened before at Breezy and many people lost their life there. Please always have your float and flag tied to your gun or better to your belt, so if any problem arise you can be at least spotted. I understand that many of you are young men and when you are in your 20s you don't have fear, but please use common sense, consider all dangers before your hunt. Dive safe.

Re: Diver Lost at Breezy Point

The hope is diminishing.
Today we search with my boat for 3 hours around Breezy Point and in NY bay area, have tried to dive. No result.
Police, Fire and National Guard did very thorough search with 2 helicopters, plane, divers and boats for almost two days. We saw copies of the maps with search result.

Yuri,
If you plan on going back during the week please let me know. I will take time off from work if you want to go during the day, or I'll be there for afternoon dives. I'll share cost of gas and whatever.

I'm Nitrox certified and have tanks and more than decent SCUBA gear, but due to the currents and shallow water I would much rather do the search in freedive.

How bad was the viz today?

Based on my maps the depth in the area is at most 24' with probably many spots at 20'. I suspect Eugene's belt was a bit on the heavy side to allow him to hunt so shallow, so if something bad happened he would probably sink. Yet being so shallow, even when sinking, he would not become strong negative to "hold bottom" so current would move him to an eddy or deeper spot.

Do you know exactly when he went missing, how was the tide at that time and when the tide changed?

Also the currents Friday were mild, but over the weekend and the beginning of this week the tides are screaming...
