Dive Shop with decent mask selection close to NYC

So my Cressi mask turns out is a bad fit andfd is filling with water so I'm spending half my time clearing and not killing fish. I'd rather try on a few before I make a purchase, any dive shops within driving distance of NYC (Rockaway Beach, Queens) that have a good selection? I've heard good things about Newport Freedive.

Liesurepro is in the city. I've been there. It's very small but they will have what you need.

Thanks, I'll give them a try. I thought for some reason they were mostly just a mailorder type store and no way to try anything on.

Leisure Pro is definitely the way to go. They have a good selection with some helpful staff. It's on 18th street with a big Leisure Pro sign out front. You have to walk in the door next to the camera shop and take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

Re: Dive Shop with decent mask selection close to NYC

I was out in Hermosa Beach, CA at last month and bought a mask from http://www.freedivenspear.com/ I know that's not near NYC but I've been diving for a long time and never knew what a properly fitted mask was until I went there. It really makes a difference to try on a variety, much more than I ever realized. Just saying. But if anyone is ever out there, the owner is really helpful and extremely knowledgeable about spearfishing and freediving.

Leisure-pro is good and it's above Adorama Camera I think on 17th or 18th street near 6th Ave.

Did you shave the top third of your mustache ? Any mask will leak when over hair.

I do not shave the top of my mustache. I have a lot of trouble finding a mask that will not leak. Many good masks do not fit me.

The brand new mako mini mask fits me great! The best dive mask I have used. Super good visibility, because the glass is so close to my eyes and it just doesn't leak. I use it for scuba and freediving.

I shave the top third of my 'stache and that makes all the difference. I'm not saying that you don't need a properly fitting mask, just that even with one, if I don't shave, I will leak. The other thing I find that can cause leaks are the strap sliding out of position or poor snorkel attachment placement.

Once in Leisure pro try Hollis M1 mask. You will be amazed by its fit.

Ended up going with the Mako Minimus mask (http://www.makospearguns.com/product-p/mmm.htm)

I figured for the price it was worth a shot. So far no leakage and I'm extremely happy with them.
