Sydney in March 2013

I am visiting Sidney in early march and i really want to get in the water and shoot something. what will i need? I am planning on bringing 2 guns with me. what kind of fish are there in March? are there any spearfishing charters?
whats the water temp like?

Also might be going up to brisbane for a couple days and i have all the same questions for that place too.

Anything would be great.

Thank you,
Cj

Re: Sydney in March 2013

You can walk to any point jump in should be able to find a few fish. I used to just walk to the end of the beach and go in off the sand as there was always bream and whiting on the way out. Small but tasty. Off the deeper points lots of small Yellowtail Kingfish, bonito small snapper. Shallower reefs and points have blue morwong, bream, luderick and Drummer in the caves right up close to the shore in the wash zone. If you get in a boat out at the FADS there will be plenty of small Mahi Mahi. Not sure about charters but Im sure they are there. If you are really keen to get some good fish though you should head out of Sydney North or South it gets much better. The water should be pretty clean most days and high tide will be better than low most of the time. I have always worn a full length wetsuit even through summer. After a couple hours in the water I get cold and is good protection when searching the caves. You can easily get away with only boardshorts but a 2/3mm wetsuit is good just stinking hot until you get in the water.
I havnt dived there for a few years as I moved overseas but my mates still seem to get a few fish.
Good luck.

Would highly recommend stopping in at a local tackle shop just to check the rules and reg's, also you will need a fishing liscence in NSW so be sure to pick one up for the duration of your stay.

Spearsamohi, I spent time working the beach in Sydney in 99/00. There is good spearing around all the headlands an the species mentioned in the earlier post are spot on. Check with Ted at extreme spearfishing for some info, dive buddies, etc.

I dove with him in the Coral Sea back in 2001. Ted has speared the better part of the Southern Hemisphere and is a good man. As mentioned earlier, a 3mm top and bottom for certain. Good luck.
