Re: New Riffe float line

I have used Riffe's Armoured Spectra Float Line and believe its a great piece of equipment but definitely a luxury item. Not 100% necessary. I recently spent some time in baja diving with a friend who dives for Riffe so I was able to play with with all the toys( and abuse them). Here's what I think

Advantages

Extremely Strong and Durable
Very lightweight/compact (great for traveling)
Hi Vis in murky water

Disadvantages

Price $$$ (Waaaaaay too expensive)
Tangles more often than a standard pvc line (similar to polypro)
The longline clips slip on the line when under a lot of strain from a fish pulling down a buoy

There were a few times when I was glad to be using one. I shot a big Yellowtail near a wreck and the fish swam into an entrance and wrapped itself around a pillar a couple times then out another exit about 20 feet away. There was so much steel and sharp edges that my normal floatline would have been worked. It took two of us to safely untangle and extract the fish.

It was also nice to use for pargo and grouper. I shot a big grouper that ran through a tunnel then around a series of rocks and ledges until it ultimately couldnt swim any further because of the line getting caught up. Again a normal line would have taken a beating. In the past we stuck to Polypro because abrasion resistance is so crucial with big reef fish. This time it was nice to have the added insurance of the Riffe line's strength.

I know a $8 piece of 100' polypro line would have done the job 99% of the time, buuuut it was pretty nice to have. I dont see a reason for needing one locally in southern Cal, but I know that I will want one for my next trip to Indo. It will be very easy to travel with, will have minimal drag in the strong currents and strong/abrasion resistant enough for big dogtooth tuna(if I get so lucky).

So there you go, just my unbiased 2 cents

Here's a pic of another large yellow where you can see the floatline. As you can see the line tangles similarly to polypro. In large part my fault for not clearing the line away from me like a dummy. Luckily the fish was already brained.

Re: New Riffe float line

James and Joseph (speardeals.com) just lowered the price on these to be almost reasonable. If you are in the market to get one, check them out they are the cheapest around by far and great customer service to boot.

$86.50 for 25'
$125.00 for 50'
$164.00 for 75'
$202.50 for 100'

Re: New Riffe float line

I found the same stuff by the foot just have to splice it yourself. Like someone said it is like wakeboarding line. I was thinking to my self a while back as to why no one had used it yet, well..................

Re: New Riffe float line

Is it really the EXACT same stuff? While it might be overpriced I would like to think Riffe at least had original gear. If it is the same stuff please post a link. Spliceing is easy.

Re: New Riffe float line

I'm almost sure Riffe don't make rope/cords. They source it from a manufacturer.

Really?? What about the silencer knives and stable snorkels? Both available from the original manufacturer at MUCH cheaper prices. Same goes for the old riffe freedive fins...

Re: New Riffe float line

here are a couple pics i took of one i cut apart , riffe says;

"ARMOURED SPECTRA FLOAT LINE (new)
RIFFE’s new Armoured Spectra Float Line features an inner float core which consists of two layers; a central 3mm closed cell neoprene core for high floatation and easy grip when under tension & a middle layer of linear spectra fibers with a total strength exceeding 2100 lbs. These linear fibers encapsulate the inner neoprene core and take up all the load on the line. Even when these fibers are under full load they can still flow smoothly around the inner neoprene core, allowing a positive grip on the line under trying conditions. The outer sheath is composed of 32 strands of armored Spectra. The fibers of each strand are fused together and coated with molten polyethylene for an extremely abrasion resistant and color-fast UV resistant protective sheath."

the cord itself my be as strong as they say but after they crimp it i highly doubt it is still anywhere close to that test , the inner core on spectra tends to creep under load when crimped. the terminal hardware is also very light maybe 700# ( i put a 900# shackle from west marine next to is for for scale) you would probably be better off with a properly spliced poly floatline.

Re: New Riffe float line

I just got my Riffe Float line in the mail. I bought it even though everyone told me it was a waste of money. The shackles are either 1200# or 2200#. I compared them to some shackles that I have from Floatline suppliers and its almost identical. The Tuna clip is as good as any other Tuna clip. The short pole in the tent is the swivel and the quick snap. I'm not sure what the bullet swivel is rated at. Its quite possible that it is upwards of 1600#, but I can't tell. The quick snap is probably between 500-700lbs max. I've never seen one stronger than that. I may replace this with another Tuna clip. I sent Riffe an email asking the strength of the crimped line and the terminal hardware, but I haven't heard back yet. Worst case 40% loss of strength due to a crimp which puts it weaker than a Neptonics floatline. The only advantages remaining are abrasion resistance, weight and space-saving size.

Great!

I'm selling 100 feet floatlines at 40$ each. Minimum order is 10 floatlines. Who wants to buy?
