Bust out of St Aug

Made the run to the Snapper Sinkhole out of St. Augustine with Mayportdiver and GA. 80 degrees and 50+ foot of vis on the surface. 68-70 degrees 50' down and vis dropped to 5'. We landed in 110' which is supposed to be the lip of the hole and couldn't see it. Saw nothing but cudas and AJ's. Scratched the dive and headed back to the boat. Dove some culverts south of St. Aug with minimal success. Saw one grouper that stayed about 15'-20' away on some culverts in 60'. That was the excitement for the day. Kinda made me wish we had gone out of Mayport like usual

I've always wondered what that spring would be like. Thanks for posting.

Re: Bust out of St Aug

GA has dove it before with 50' of vis and said its one of the coolest dives. I guess the thermo has moved in and pooped on our parade that day. Maybe next year.

Re: Bust out of St Aug

On Monday we had less than 10' at 20 miles out (north), and 15-20 vis at 10-15 miles. I think the thermo has moved in everywhere by now.

Re: Bust out of St Aug

I have been in the hole a few times. Once with 100' vis. It's sandy all the way around (it's kind of oblong) and dips from about 90 ish to 120+ and then it's a shear drop. Wizard pulled a bug out of a crevace at 150' one time. I went 180' with Tracy Grubbs another time and met my first experience with nitrogen narcosis. Didn't really scare me, but I had a buzz for sure. It's a cool dive but I've never seen much in the way of fish.

Re: Bust out of St Aug

How big in diameter is the hole itself?

Re: Bust out of St Aug

To the best of my estimation... maybe 160' x 240'

Oval shape at the entry
