DIY Flashers
I'm sure i am not the first to do something like this, but i figured i would share my project for anyone looking to make a lot of flashers quickly.
Materials: Amazon laminator - $22 100 laminating pouches - $13 160 ft bird repellent ribbon - $12 1.) Take the ribbon and cut out fish shapes in whatever sizes you want. 2.) Lay these out onto the pouch in a way that you can cut between each row to make strips. 3.) Run through the laminator and cut the strips. Easy as pie. The hardest part is cutting out all the fish shapes. Once you have the laminator, you just need to buy pouches and ribbon to keep making more. I'm not sure what is the best way to rig these together, but i want to use a lot and make them easy to deploy without tangling. I think I might make loops along 5 ft or so of fishing line at the end of a conventional rod and reel. Then use snap links to connect the flashers. A heavy weight at the bottom would allow me to lower the whole setup at once. If anyone has any advice on this let me know! Also, a way to cut the fish out quicker! |

Re: DIY Flashers
This is slick! But I wonder how will the laminates hold up in the salt?
I just use clear packing tape laid sticky side up, place mylar shapes on it and then lay another strip of tape over top of it and viola. You can also use a cheetos bag if you're poor like me. I had all of 2.99 in my last setup including the bag of chips. The float I used was an old Gatorade bottle and the weight was a big ass wrench I found... Yants... plaster of paris, 5 pack of small wiffle balls and go to ebay for a bag of 1x1 tile mirror tiles,

I wonder what would flash better, those acrylic tiles from ebay on a wiffle, or wrapping the wiffle with a ? |

Re: DIY Flashers
Since the ball is round and your tiles are flat you will need to use some medium that will keep them attached. Adhesive backed tiles might not be the best option. Personally i would look for a glass tile first and just keep it protected in a sock attached to a small reel.
OR just go to these wonderful people and get a disco ball already made and move on to the next project I would drill a hole, shove some BBs inside and seal her back up...Rattle Ball... http://www.neptonicsystems.com/Spearfishing-Flasher.php

Re: DIY Flashers
Thanks guys. I haven't tried this setup in the water yet, but hopefully i can give it a go this weekend. As far as durability, that remains to be seen. but it seems pretty sturdy so I have high hopes. I'll try to get some pictures of it in action.

Re: DIY Flashers
Looking good! I recall seeing spearos using enrique iglesias CD's as flashers for pelagics..gotta be enrique..
But in all seriousness I don't remember the name of the video or who's crew it was but it was pretty funny/cool re-use of old CD's. Not sure how they would hold up to salt water though.. |

Re: DIY Flashers
CDs work well. I've used whiffle balls with reflective tape pieces stuck to them as well. Anything flashy will do really IMO, fish are curious in the blue water.

Re: DIY Flashers
Here is how I make my throw flashers with leftover reel/wishbone line and old 14mm rubber. They work better than the ones you can buy, the CDs light up better than any reflectors I have seen. They sink very slow...maybe 20' per minute. Having 2 CDs with the shiny aide out they really catch a lot of light.
