Seems to always be alittle better when you work further south towards Hamossasa. The is a Bird platform about half way between the two. we usually end up in that area just inside the platform.

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

Go south of all the boats you will see and get into 3ft of water. Drift/swim until you find some then anchor. Lots of scallops, easy to finf, but they are smaller this year. I suggest to keep only the larger ones, you will still get your limit. Good luck.

I wait until later in the season when they get some size on them. Not worth the effort right now.

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

We've been going to Homosassa almost every year for the last 7 years and just got back from 3 days there and this is the best opener I've seen. We had our 10 gals. every day in less than an hour. We were a few miles north of the Homosassa channel in 4-5'. By the 2nd day we were getting very selective on size. It was really almost too easy but with all the afternoon storms it was nice to be off the water and done cleaning them in time for the rain to wash the boat down.

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

Just to squirrel the thread a bit I thought I'd throw in a factoid.
For those who go after both scallop and flounder, there isn't a better descaler for flounder than a reasonably fresh bay scallop shell. The shell edge ridges have the correct spacing to get under the rear edge of the flounder's small scales. Take a bucket of the shells home and find an a large ant colony to clean them. Each shell half is good for 3-5 flatfish before the edge starts to dull. Then discard the dull one and grab another one.

Re: Crystal River Scallop Grounds

Homosassa viz at the top of the incoming was 12-15. Decent. No jellies in sight.
