Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
I would personally go with the 2 stroke for the weight savings. i also would not worry about fuel consumption very much in that size engine. I have read great things about the smaller tohatsu/nissan motors.

Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
Good point. To give some perspective, my Tohatsu 40 takes me over to Catalina and back and runs a few miles around the island on 12 gallons. I guess thirsty is relative

My engine arrived, what a beauty! Can't wait to take it for a ride. I will give a review and be the "official" guinea pig for this motor. Thanks for the input all!!

Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
Congratulations -- that looks like a really nice set up. You're going to love that boat! I look forward to a full review.
Please let me know how the drain sock works for you -- I've been thinking about getting one for my boat. Here are a couple of changes I've made on my boat you might consider: I found that the aluminum deck gets really slippery, more so with neoprene socks. I bought a heavy rubber mat, which fits in the boat perfectly: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...6157_200306157 If you can wait for one of their free shipping sales, that will save about $40. I have the same trailer. The incandescent trailer lights were always giving me trouble so I upgraded to LEDs (Harbor Freight) and they have been 100 percent reliable. I'll let you know when I'm next on the North Coast -- perhaps we can arrange a dive -- and if you're ever down in So Cal I'd be happy to do the same here. Cheers, Jon |

Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
After a long wait I finally got the time to test out the motor. Couldn't of timed it better, flat calm conditions and 70 degree temps. The motor did great and started on the first pull. The idle was a little high when I first started out but that went away after an hour of motoring. Must have been a little stiff on the cable for being new. It was perfect on the way in. It was pretty quiet and no smoke smell like the old two strokes. Very smooth running at all speeds. The engine had plenty of power too, it kick some Arse! After 15 years of using a 1982 ten horse merc I am now spoiled. Will update next time or if a problem comes up. I recommend this motor so far.
Jon, thanks for the great tips on setting up my inflatable. I installed the bow bag and floor mats, they worked great. Will keep in mind the LEDs, the regular lights worked good so far. Didn't use the drain sock yet but probably wouldn't recommend it. It's up higher on the transom and you would have to have a lot of water in it to drain. I wish the drain was near the center, the lowest point. Let me know when you head north for a abalone dive. |

Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
Glad to hear you got the boat out -- looks like a perfect combination. If I ever have to replace the Tohatsu, I'll look at the Evinrude.
I took mine out yesterday too. Vis was mediocre, didn't see any game worth mentioning and the water was cold but I still had a great time. Topside conditions were perfect and on the way back I passed a gray whale and spotted several blue sharks basking on the surface. After the dive it was nice to take a quick hot shower (a 2-gallon beverage cooler filled with hot water and a Zodi electric pump): http://www.zodi.com/Dealer/zodidealermedia1067.html |

Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
Several trips now with the Evinrude 40 HP outboard & thought I would give a update. What can I say, I couldn't be happier. The engine starts on the first pull every time and has plenty of power, almost too much power. I'm definitely going to put a hydrofoil on it for solo trips, loaded down with other divers, weight & gear it's fine. As for gas it doesn't seem bad, also doesn't emit that smoke smell while motoring. Hope this review helps someone eles looking for this type of outboard, looking forward to many safe trips with this engine

Jadespearo:
What a great boat! I have so many questions... What model Avon is that? Are you still happy with the ETEC 40? Do you have any idea how that boat would go with en ETEC 30? What is the make and model of that trailer? I notice that you have a transom saver. How has that worked for you? Their use is controversial... Do you trailer it over long distances? If so, how is the transom holding out with the 240 lb weight of the ETEC 40 on it while bouncing around on the trailer? The bunks that sit under the transom - where do they make contact with the soft hull towards the front of the boat, and does that pressure stretch the hull fabric in contact with the fore section of those bunks? Thanks in advance for the info. SB Last edited by Silver Bullet; 06-28-2013 at 08:38 AM. |

Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
I have a quick question for you. I am looking at the same engine but for an aluminum skiff. You may not be able to answer this question but I'll ask anyway.
How does the engine do at low rpm, as in idling? I need my boat to troll for salmon with as well and in most cases this size outboard doesn't do well trolling for long periods. Otherwise I like the report as it is encouraging. How much gas do you estimate you are consuming? Thanks!

@ searun a neighbor has an 25 e tec and it does fine. I use a 14' with elec troller, with 25 mariner on back and cost nothing to troll.

Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
i am a huge suzuki fan
they were the ones that started the 6 year warranty. yamaha would me number 2 choice. i have a 1989 suzuki on my mckee. My father re powered the boat for me after my bother overheated the old motor and kept running it until it locked up... We have had very little trouble with that motor. i think all we have ever done was impellers, and just recently a temp flow sending unit. every year i think it will be the year to repower... I have not had it winterized in years.. I go out, pump the bubble, hit the choke, and pow... fires right up.. great engine. |

Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
i know its old, but i replaced the impeller in a dt200 yesterday.
the lower had not been off in 7 years... easy squeezie... i also talked with tow suzuki dealers here and they both laughed about them having MORE problems than other brands... sounds to me like the mechanic that keeps breaking bolts needs some training.... if a bolt is stuck a little heat to the surrounding aluminum will free it every time. aluminum expands much faster than the stainless bolts that are used.... also FYI acetone and transmission fluid make the worlds best penetrating fluid..... |

Re: Which is the best rated 40HP outboard?
Hey, Jadespearo,
Could you post a pic of your outboard tilted down and locked in running position (similar to the pic I posted in this response) from the rear so that I can see the height of the cavitation plate in relation to the bottom of your transom? The cavitation plate is the lowest plate, and the one directly above the propeller. My cavitation plate is 3 inches below the bottom of the transom, and I am told that this is why I am having problems with my boat. It would be helpful to see if yours is considerably higher than mine. Apparently it ought to be around the same position as the bottom of the transom. Thanks in advance, SB |
