Cat Express: Spearguns stay with the captain

Due to previous reports of theft, I am reluctant to relinquish my gun to the captain for the duration of the passage. Is there any way to circumvent this? Will the deckhands be so bold as to steal a speargun? I am keeping all items and gear on my person, and the gun is the exception. I am thinking of disconnecting the shaft from the gun, as the gun is harmless without the shaft, yet the shaft might be easier to pinch. I gladly welcome your input, and please do not derail.

The deckhands worry me. The best advice I've found is to not store any gear below deck. If possible I'll stay vigilant and maintain eyesight on the cabin. Hopefully there are lockers.

how about putting it in a locked case? yes, they can steal the case..... or break the lock. But it's an added deterrent. Sport tube comes to mind.

I wouldn't worry, I live in Two Harbors and travel the express a minimum of once a month for groceries. I have NEVER had anything stolen. But I do prefer to not put anything under the boat, as I've had bins dump over below and lost miscellaneous things like dish sponges. Or if your worried give it to the captain, I gave him my new shotgun a few weeks ago and got it back upon arrival. LOL.

Oooooh, thanks for posting that screamer lock. I had no idea something like that was available. In fairly close quarters I would think that would give away that someone was messing with my stuff.

I have never had a problem with guns but have had other things taken. I usually take my boat over but have taken the express about a dozen times with the kids or when it was rough. Keep in mind that you will not be able to walk to spear on the east side of avalon. The road has been closed to bike and foot traffic for years and they do enforce it with passion! Good luck

I know for a fact through someone I know who worked with the company for a while that a lot of those DH's have numerous DUIs and have to ride their bikes to work. Real stand-up crew.... With that said, not all of them are criminals or have criminal records.

Tell the guys that you paid a lot of money for your gear and refuse to let it out of visible range. And if you can, try to ride out and back on weekdays. They tend to let you stay with your gear if the boat isn't packed.

Re: Cat Express: Spearguns stay with the captain

Keep the gun in a cheap nylon ski bag and the shafts inside a PVC tube with caps; both gun and tube inside the ski bag. Nobody will know what it is, so no problem.
Actually, a good idea is to keep all your dive gear in a cheap duffle bag as well. Why advertise what's inside to all?

Problem with this is, if you put it in a cup of water then cut it, if it doesnt short from being in contact with water, the water would deffinetly muffle it to the point here its not likely to be heard.
