Re: A Monster Film, Video and Television Experience - the NAB Show in Las Vegas!
So, here's another hot subject ---- drone unmanned camera systems.
Check out my last video on this subject here: More Drone Camera Test Flights - Boats, Beaches and Buildings I went to an hour of a workshop on drone aerial videography. There are many, many, many people interested in this subject. The coolest booth with drones was the DJI exhibition with live flying demos of the small drone I bought and bigger drones for heavier cameras. Everything I heard and saw at NAB ratified my decision on how best to get into this field with the DJI Phantom 2 with the Zenmuse Gimbal and a GoPro Hero 3+ Black camera at a total cost of around $2,500. The drone in the classroom in the fourth photo down with the red eye guy was used in the feature film The Expendables and was toting a high end RED camera. They showed video of a drone filmed motorcycle stunt from that movie. The DJI Phantom 2 in the fifth classroom pic is just like mine. Quite a few of these very experienced and formally certified drone pilots are using that unit for some TV and video projects. Last edited by SpearMax; 04-09-2014 at 06:25 PM. |

I made a $90 show special purchase of this Hoodman device for my drone rig.
This is an excellent sun shade hood for my drone's video down link monitor. Can't wait to try it out. |

Of course, there was the other high end of the scale with real helicopter camera systems and all-terrain vehicle camera systems like those at this Cineflex booth.

Before I post the Black Magic booth photos, let's go over the stuff I found at the Japanese public broadcaster NHK's booth because it helps understand what Black Magic is doing to bring lower cost 4k technology into play. The Japanese NHK (see http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/) has a very future oriented research arm. They are working on broadcasting 8k Super Hi-Vision or Ultra High Definition format all over the place by the year 2020 as the charts below show along with the comparison to current high definition technology. The images look fantastic in person standing there, but these super high resolutions in your typical living room application are really beyond the maximum the human eye can perceive according to a seminar I attended on the first day. The main question is when will masses of consumers shell out big bucks to upgrade yet again? Last edited by SpearMax; 04-11-2014 at 09:28 PM. |

At the Ikegami booth I met one of the Japanese engineers actually shooting with the 8k Ultra High Definition camera shown below. A few pics of the other Ikegami cameras are shown too.

Re: A Monster Film, Video and Television Experience - the NAB Show in Las Vegas!
Now to Black Magic design's booth we see some amazing 4k cameras at relatively low prices (excluding lenses, batteries, and other important accessories).
Black Magic design is an Australian company. A friend of mine has one of their smaller cameras in an underwater housing. Check them out here: http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/ You will note the camera at the bottom has 13 stops of "Dynamic Range" and 2.5 k of resolution for about $2,000. I added two dynamic range charts for illustration. The theory behind the 21 step chart according to its website is simple: each of the 21 steps is exactly one stop denser than the one before it, which makes it dead easy to look at the image of the chart on a monitor and see, instantly, how much dynamic range a camera has with its current settings. The new Ursa camera says this on their website here: http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicursa "URSA is a true professional digital film camera with a 4K sensor, global shutter and an incredible 12 stops of dynamic range. The wide dynamic range blows away regular video cameras or even high end broadcast cameras, so you get dramatically better images that look like true digital film. The wide dynamic range preserves detail in dark shadows as well as bright highlights so you have a wider range of brightness levels to work with when color grading in post production. The extra large Super 35 size allows for creative shallow depth of field shooting and the high resolution Ultra HD 12 bit lossless Cinema DNG RAW means you get incredible quality! You can also shoot Ultra HD or HD in Apple ProRes™ for easy post production workflow with minimum storage requirements!" Last edited by SpearMax; 04-11-2014 at 10:14 PM. |

Here is an excellent explanation of the 4k fuss:
What is 4K UHD? Next-generation resolution explained Note this in the article: "There was a huge, noticeable leap from standard definition to HD, but the difference between 1080p and 4K is not as marked," said researcher Dave Lamb of 3M Laboratories. He added that "4K is at the point of diminishing returns," but said there could be some benefits for screens over 55 inches." |

Let's look at the only underwater housings besides Gopro that I saw at NAB. They were Gates Housings in an aquarium at the Canon booth.

Of course, the usual "Big Boys" of Television and film were there such as SONY and Panasonic. I have several SONY cameras and have owned Panasonic cameras in the past.
