Pathos Carbon damaging the rubber

Hi guys,

Since some time I've been having problems with my gun. Somehow the rubbers are getting damaged, not sure why.

Here are some pics, the black are the old rubbers and the purple are fresh, just went diving with them twice.

I also sanded the edges between the connection of the muzzle and the barrel quite a while ago, but still having the same problem.
Is it may be the crimp of the shooting line? Let me know what you guys think.

Cheers

Re: Pathos Carbon damaging the rubber

Rest the bands on a flat surface (looks like an O)
Is the damage on the inner or the outer part of the bands?

For me, I noticed my bands had damage on the outer parts. I only realized after some time, that diving around reef and rocks was actually cutting my bands. It always happens close to the muzzle as well.

Not sure if you are having the same issue.

Re: Pathos Carbon damaging the rubber

The damage is in the inner part of the band, I will try and maybe sand the edges of the crimp, and see what happens. But that would also mean that it might affect the shot, if it touches the rubber and cut it, no?

Is the anyone else having the same issue?

Thanks for your reply

That pic of the purple one doesn’t look like that part you are pointing to would cause that. I don’t think that is sharp enough to do that. Do you have a pic of your whole gun so we could see the rest of it.

Are you shorediving? I had some similar wear on my bands and chalked it up to sand grains that I picked up in the surf. I could be 100% wrong though.

Re: Pathos Carbon damaging the rubber

A few things that could be the culprit of this band damage (which is actually common with any speargun). With the Pathos the biggest culprit is usually the front line guide. It is cut with wire cutters and has extremely sharp edges. Use a sanding bit on a dremel to dull those edges and then polish and buff it ... that is where most of the damage to bands happens. Also pass your hand over the muzzle and look out for sharp edges on the plastic and file them off with a small file. Sharp plastic easily cuts rubber that is moving at velocity. Also look at your shaft and buff off all edges of the shark fins and back cut notch of the shaft ... this can also help prevent cuts to line and removing sharp edges of the sear notch also prevents damage to your trigger sear. One last thing is to look at your crimp ... if it has sharp edges you can carefully file them off.

In the end you should think of rubber bands similar to car tires ... they need to be replaced every once in a while if they get damaged.
