This is taken from spearing the west coast of oz on the Califonia forum!

Re: Spearing on the west coast of Oz

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is Hans take on what happened with the Tiger!

"We spotted the tiger shark early on in the day, about 12' long and very friendly. After a while the tiger disappeared from view, Barry spotted him once more so we kept swimming as a pair most of the time specially when landing fish.
The water just started to get very dirty on the surface from plankton being washed off the reef (that red gunk).
I dived about 30meters behind the boat to depth of about 10m and scanned for mackerel. As I turned my head from right to left I had the tiger right against my left knee coming up vertically from the bottom trying to bite my left arm. As it was impossible to move my gun accross with my right hand while holding it by the handle I just let go of my gun handle and grabbed the barrel in front of the reel and slammed the barrel on to the tigers nose. This seemed to make the tiger react quite violent as he lurched forward now right in front of my chest and he grabbed my barrel only inches away from my hand, bit through my rubber on both sides of the muzzle and shook me a couple of times. I knew that letting go of my barrel would leave me completely defenceless.
As soon as the tiger released my barrel I managed to give it a couple of jabs with the spear and it finally swam off.
No need to say that we left after this incident, me with a huge overdose of adrenalin pumping through my body.
There are a couple of teeth marks on the alum barrel and a hole from a tooth in the muzzle. Hans Beyeler "

Re: Spearing on the West Coast of Oz

You guys are a true testament that reels can get it done in almost ALL situations! Float lines are a nuisance to be honest.
