Eating AJs with worms?
Hello,
Shot a nice 42" AJ over the weekend. When I filleted, I noticed it had the pure white worms in it that one could mistake for strands of fat. They're definitely worms though. Not a lot of them, but a few. Is it dangerous to eat the AJ meat with the worms? Not exactly appetizing, but would hate to waste such a big fish. Thanks. |

Not dangerous at all. The worms will die when cooked or when frozen and even if they don't die, they won't affect humans. Remove them as much as you can. Freeze the meat to -4 F for a fews days, cook it well, and enjoy.

Ditto the above. They are harmless and nothing more than protein when it comes to human consumption. I just cut away the meat with the worms and eat the rest.
Interesting fact: What you see in the meat of AJs and many other species of fish is a parasitic worm in its adolescence. The only way for that worm to grow into its adult stage is to get inside the digestive system of a shark or a ray. That's why they position themselves near the tail in most cases. That's the first place the shark bites. |
