NE Regs
I notice that spearfishing is illegal in Massachusetts, Maine? and I'm not sure where else back there and I've always wondered why that is. Ecology? (Lliberal ) Politics dominance?

Re: NE Regs
Peter,
I can't tell you about Maine, but Massachusetts has had a long love affair with striped bass. In 1638 legislation was passed prohibiting the use of striped bass to fertilize fields. This was possibly the first conservation measure passed in the country. In 1948 the current regulations were passed where striped bass can be taken by "hook and line" only. This has been a very popular law as it elimanates many of the commercial fishing techniques that had previously been used. There are only a handful of guys in the state taht can really nail them by rod and reel during the commercial season. Spearfishing for other species is legal in Massachusetts. Chauggie |

Re: NE Regs
It's legal to spearfish in Maine. You can't shoot striped bass, but you're allowed to shoot flounders (more than 12" I think), tautogs, bluefish, pollock, etc.

Re: NE Regs
Actually, the current NH regs allow 2 striped bass a day over 28", but only one can be over 40".

Re: NE Regs
I believe the regulations went into effect last year. Two over 28" but only one over 40" The regs you quoted were the year before.

Re: NE Regs
This started with "spearfishing illegal" in Mass. ? I presume you are talking stripers... Most of the other fish can be taken with guns.

Re: NE Regs
I'm not sure if it's legal to spearfish in Maine. Last time I checked the Maine regulation (2004) it wasn't allowed. ????

Re: NE Regs
No no no,
It's legal to spearfish in Maine. It's illegal to spear STRIPED BASS. Look regulations, and they'll tell you what NOT to do, including not spearing bass and halibut... |
