Ft Myers Question...

Is there any spearing available from shore in the area? Trying to convince the family and friends that we need to go to the Keys for vacation, but the ladies want reservations at Pink Shell Resort...

Contact moderator Biggsy by PM. John lives in that area and knows the diving there well.

Re: Ft Myers Question...

Holy Crud, that is alot of coin.

Jeez tell them about the "Breakers" in West Palm Beach for about the same money. All the movie stars go there, and even CNBC broadcasts live from there couple of times a year. They just did the Golf tournament broadcast on TV last weekend from there too. Shopping doesn't suck either with big name shops a couple of blocks down the street.

But atleast you can jump in from the beach and go shoot something, let alone hop on many many boats for a quicky 2 tank dive and be back with the ladies for a late lunch.

Re: Ft Myers Question...

Theres some diving on the bridges of sanibel island but the vis can be pretty bad at times.. If you dive there you will see hundreds and hundreds of sheepshead (2-5lbs) and some mangrove snapper but they will be on the smaller side.. last time I dove that area we had 12" of vis but still managed to shoot a few sheeps... its an interesting area to dive, if its high tide and the weather has been calm for a few days you should be fine...

Re: Ft Myers Question...

Go to West Palm or Jupiter instead. Crystal clear water, several boats to charter, good restuarants, and as they said Ft Myers/Sanibel is not that great. The whole family will like West Palm/Jupiter. Nicer beach, clear water, reef is just offshore, better night life, you name its better.

Re: Ft Myers Question...

Go to the Keys. Fort Myers is ghetto.

There are rocks off of Bunche Beach with small grouper and sheepshead.

Re: Ft Myers Question...

Go to the keys.
The water here is cold, green and unfriendly.
I live here and do all my fishing in Marathon.
The Pink Shell in Estero wont be able to compete with the digs in the keys.

Re: Ft Myers Question...

I used to guide in the FTM area but never did any shore diving. Stop in Dean's Dive Center (or call them) and see what they say; Brent and Scott are both big time spearfishermen.
There are some decent places to go but most of the are too far for a shore dive. Lower Matlacha pass is loaded with oyster bars and fish. Current gets pretty wicked at times though. Charlotte harbor has some small wrecks and rubble (they are on the charts). All hold snapper, black drum, and sheepshead. Grouper are closed till April and cobia won't make an appearance until late March.
Vis is best in the winter but 20 feet (inshore) is the best you can hope for and you'll be lucky to find that. One final note; Watch out for the man in the grey suit...he makes frequent appearances along those oyster bars.

Good luck!

Re: Ft Myers Question...

Why in the hell would you want to go to Fort Misery? I grew up there and moved away the day after I got my high school diploma, and I grew up in the nice part. Anywhere on the East Coast would be better. Of course if you have your sights set on it, best of luck.
I live 5 hrs away and have not been back for 14 years.

HB

It was not my intention to say nasty things about Fort Myers residents on this board, as I do not know any of you. I just hated the place
