Barracuda?
so what's the deal with barracuda? i see pictures of people shooting them all the time but from what i thought they have a poor quality meat. I was talking to a Bohemian guy who said he loves to eat them and then another guy who says he just uses them for shark chum. I see some nice 4-5 ft ones almost every time i dive in palm beach and part of me wants to shoot the hell out of 'em when theres nothing else around but i feel bad killing fish that i'm not going to eat..any thoughts??

Re: Barracuda?
Good questions.
They're delicious. Make sure with the local spearos which ones to avoid. Ciguatera is a problem with the larger ones in the Caribbean and in South Florida waters like the Keys. But we eat them if they're under 2 feet generally. Just make sure to take their skin off, all of it, it smells horrendous. |

Re: Barracuda?
theres nothing poor quality about them. they have been implicated with ciguetara. this is only due to the fact that most cudas are large predatory fish. any predatory fish in forida that is large for its species carries the same risk. keep them under 15lbs if you are worries about it. i would suggest that you just dont shoot them. there are plenty of other fish to take, without the worries.

Re: Barracuda?
I'm with NOTANX, wouldn't shoot them, not worth taking the risk when there are other fish to shoot. Besides, have you ever smelled a cuda? That's one of the nastiests stinks, smells like vomit.

Re: Barracuda?
In the Bahamas we used to catch the 6 footers all the time trolling for grouper and we'd grind them in the meat grinder and shoot snowball sized loads down to the sea floor, I swear other than maybe conch or lobster it's the best chum ever ! Yellowtail would come out of no where to take bites out of the Cuda.

Re: Barracuda?
Yes sir. Are They pretty hard to kill when you shoot em. Do they ever come back at you or do the pretty much act like any other speared fish and run for there life.

Re: Barracuda?
Barracuda stinks on the outside and the inside. They are very bony and hard to clean. The risk of ciguatera is high in all sized fish. The barracuda is a dangerous fish which when speared can turn on you and cause serious damage. I know a guy who lost his left ear and part of his cheek to a barracuda attack. They are very hard to subdue due to their inherent aggressive reaction to being handled. The head is too hard to use a knife to dispatch it. You can waste up to 30 minutes with one barracuda. Automatic snapping bites even after death have claimed fingers in the past. Barracuda blood is a very efficient shark attractor, be ready for visitors. Need more reasons to not waste your time?

Re: Barracuda?
alright so basically for the trouble you have to go through and the risk of losing appendages as well as getting ciguatera ill leave them all for westpalmspearo
