The 120cm gun is actually 147cm long - now I understand how they get 132cm band stretch. At first it sounded like you had to pull the band past the butt, left go, and hope it catches on a shark fin What I still don't understand is what part of the gun is considered the "body"? Is it from the front tip of the gun to the trigger guard, or is it from the front tip of the gun to the front of the handle, or is it some other part of the gun? I need a Euro speargun anatomy lesson so I can figure out what size gun I use

Re: Most used speargun length
standard euro sizes were, once upon a time, the lengths of the pipe between the detachable handle and the detachable muzzle. American wood guns were measured from tip to butt. Then some companies like C4 and Abellan , among others, started using the band stretch. Now, with rollers and similar advanced technology, band stretch is not used, but actual length corresponds to a much longer band stretch than before. And let's not start with pneumatics spearguns... :-)

Re: Most used speargun length
OK, so my main go-to gun is 39" (99cm) from the front to the front of the trigger guard, and 43" (109cm) band stretch. Does that mean I shoot a ~100cm?

Re: Most used speargun length
depends on hw you like it ;-) if you like band stretch , it is a 109 , otherwise, measure the total length ( and you will hve it in the old US way ) or measure the space between muzzle and mech, not the front of the guard, and you will have it old euro way Size dont matter, though

Re: Most used speargun length
Thanks for clearing that up sacha
It is 50" overall, so I'm calling it a 127cm edit: BTW, it is not the one in my avatar, I built that one for a friend that wanted that style.

For example wooden speaguns usualy have two band holes in the muzzle. So you will measure distance from the hole which is closer to the mech and last pin on the shaft. That is the speargun size. We usualy want to achieve as much power as we can get from speargun so we put last pin very close to the mech to achieve more extension. For examle moving from classic mech to reverse can give you space to move pin more backwards so you can achive 7,8 or more centimeters extra band extension on the same speargun. So it sounds like that gun size depands of the shaft... Yes and no. You will measure band hole in the muzzle to mech distance minus 1-2 cm and that will be your gun size. For example one of my wooden spearguns have 89cm band extension, 110 overall lenght and it is declared as 90cm speargun. Hope I helped. |

Re: Most used speargun length
I think the confusion could all be cleared up if spearguns size was determined by shaft size. This is how regular guns are sized by caliber. A 22 cal gun is a 22 cal gun and a .223 is a .223.
What happens after that has many combinations and considerations. A speargun that shoots a 170 cm shaft should be called a 170 cm gun and a speargun that shoots a 62 inch shaft should be called a 62 inch gun. The size of the gun, band stretch and diameter of the shaft should be each manufacture's secret sauce to maximize power and accuracy out of a given length shaft.

It's the measure from the band hole to the last pin/sharkfin/notch.

So I now conclude my #1 go-to gun is a 100cm. This makes sense because I hunt the reefs 99% of the time. Also, I agree with you sacha, length doesn't matter - it's the girth that counts
