first time i been looking for stone crabs, didnt know some were so strong lol, but didnt get pinched. i only got a small amount, fish got the majority of it all. like he said cold water (60 f), currents were a pain, i held on to the rocks and pilings sometimes. also first time diving in the bay too. steamed mine up tonight too, had a hell of a good time.

Hey Josh glad you got to go crabbing with Jeff. If you're gonna keep doing it make sure you've got some good neoprene gloves. The only way to get a bunch is to just reach in and grab them. Sooner or leter you will get pinched. It F'ing hurts w/o good gloves. I had one get me when I was wearing leather gloves.

Re: Bridge Diving Tampa bay 1/20/09=crabs

I have done tons of crabbing/shooting in the TB area...
The currents can be deadly, and I mean deadly.. Learned quickly how to plan dives based on tides, makes all the difference in the world...
This time of year the bay holds some really nice grouper, but the window of decent viz is pretty small.... I have had times though, when all it took was a tank, and had a stringer full.. Then over to my areas to crab, where visibility didnt matter so much...

Lets hook up sometime.. I have a boat that is just great for 2-3 guys...

You have to be quick once you pull them from their hole and grab the other claw as well. If I get pinched real hard is when I take both claws.
