Re: What kind of grouper is this?
Looks like a Red, but they(Nassau's) have yellow on most fins, and the black square on the dorsal caudal peduncal. Right before the tail on top. Both can have same colors. Nassaus can be more white striped than a red, but they can also change in an instant. Reds get that way, but not as defined. I have shot, caught, gutted 1000s of Red grouper and polespeared and Hawaiian slinged 100s of Nassau's. Yes they do look very similar but the real give away is the black spot before the tail on the Nassau.

I don't know what kind of fish Gamble is shooting but his definitely do not look like mine. And lastly for Gamble, please feel free to stop by my home anytime to inspect the contents of my freezer. I think you will find plenty in there to verify that I do shoot fish. Maybe I'll even give you a couple to take home. |

Re: What kind of grouper is this?
So have you shot a red grouper with a spot on it's dorsal saddle?
You can say what you want but Reds DON'T have a spot on their dorsal saddle and Nassau's ALWAYS do. Just because it's not striped doesn't make it a Red. Regarding the "kind" of fish I'm shooting, plenty of legal ones. Thanks for the fish offer but I'm good. |

Nassaus have vertical stripes. This fish is a red.

Re: What kind of grouper is this?
Not all of them and it may or may not have had stripes under water. The one Chris shot is 100% no question a Nassau. The defining coloration is the spot and yellow fin tips.
