Tuna Crabs are in!

Has anyone seen these before?
About a mile out they were everywhere! The water was flat and calm but it looked like rain the way these things were breaking the surface. I have never seen anything like it.
Maybe why the whales were just outside the kelp line?

A sign of good things to come. Pelagic red crabs. I wonder how they taste.

We saw those at cat a few weeks ago. Fun little buggers. We didn't know what they were but they were fun to look at kicking and swimming trying to avoid gettin eatin by all the small fish.

They are pretty common during an El Niņo. In 97 they were in the surf at Swamis.

Re: Tuna Crabs are in!

Anyone ever eat one?

I'm assuming they'd probably taste like any crustation.... Might be good to fry a few like soft shell crab / mini poppers but you'd have to get a bunch lol

Re: Tuna Crabs are in!

Didn't these mess up the fishing in the 97/98 el nino? I remember on the sport boats fishing was terrible because of how much food was in the water. Or I don't remember right because I was so young...
But for diving these might be epic...
