Re: Heads UP: Missing Boater off Carpenteria: 12/9/21 1

Falling off a boat is more common that people think. I hope he is recovered safe.

Re: Palos Verdes Dive Conditions 10-30-2021

Some of the shallower reefs there have not been producing much bugs lately.
But I also found the same in Malibu, so maybe they're just moving deeper(?). Though with such flat conditions they should...

Re: Palos Verdes Dive Conditions 11-06-2021

Re: Some Might Need to Know

I think the best strategy is to release bugs if the caliper touches the tail part. It's not worth the hassle. Why have to argue with over-zealous wardens and be splitting hairs? There's usually...

The other day in Malibu I saw some tar floating on the surface, and then I stepped on some tar on my way out.
I was hoping that the Huntington Beach crude oil leak had moved to the south, thanks to...

Also, the recent wind storms ruined the vis inshore and dropped the water temps by about 10F. So now the bugs are not in social mood.

Re: Very sad news; Tailsurfer, AKA Josh Bouna is presumed lost to the sea.

San Onofre! 20 miles south in just 3 days, a ripping current...Shows you how difficult ocean search and recovery can be.
RIP Josh. God bless.

Re: Very sad news; Tailsurfer, AKA Josh Bouna is presumed lost to the sea.

This is very sad indeed. Especially because he was not a newbie diver.
The lesson here: never underestimate the ocean. Big surf can be lethal. Always evaluate the conditions before going in, and if...

Adrad lobster bags

My trusty Adrad lobster bag is getting worn out. I searched online and cannot find them anymore.
Adrad bags were super convenient and secure, with the twist-twice handles locking in place with one...

Re: of Sharks and Props...

The situation with line fishermen in the state is getting out of control.
At many beaches nowadays you cannot even walk as a couple of fishermen set a couple poles each with the lines in the water,...

Re: SoCal beaches are closed

It's complete paranoia right now. A surfer got fined $1,000 in Manhattan Beach...
We shore freedivers are the most "socially distanced" in our sport. Only fish are exposed to us...This shore access...

Re: Breakwater Battle turning in Our Favor

I wish the state would build jetties along the shore. Instead of thinking about tearing the LA breakwall...
Jetties would help protect the shore and reduce beach erosion.
It is amazing how much...

Re: One Positive Result from the Conception Disaster

33 divers plus 5 crew is just too much even for a 70' vessel like the Conception. I never liked cattle-boat diving, when I was scuba diving 30 years ago. I hope the new rules help avoid tragedies in...

Re: Grunion Munchies, Sharks and Sea Lion Tidbits

It is however strange that no diver has been hit so far despite the large number of GWS in recent years, and the large number of divers in these areas.

I guess they're not actively pursuing us...

Re: No kelp. Permanent situation?

Nor big ElNIno but we're still in a mild Nino mode. The kelp will return, relatively quickly, it's part of the cycle.
There has also been major eel grass loss along the shores. This one takes more...
