Purchases in Europe while traveling

My family will be traveling from Hawaii to Italy for a long anticipated vacation soon. So I wanted to ask the opinion of all who have lived/traveled to both countries (and Europe in general). What is the must buy items if any while traveling? Wetsuits seem to be an amazing deal but real world advice would be nice. Also guns from a European manufacturer seem to so much cheaper if purchased in Europe. Does anybody have experience with this? We plan on maybe buying quite a few personal items aside from spearfishing gear and shipping home (Maui which has very little variety on choices for anything). We will be staying in Liguria but traveling around quite a bit.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Purchases in Europe while traveling

I've brought gear from Italy many times. As you said, prices in the USA are ridiculously expensive. Masks, Snorkels, wetsuits, euro spearguns, reels, fins, knives, and many other items cost half the price over there. I don't have any experince shiping stuff to the USA though.

Just got back from Spain last week, you're right on a lot of those items being cheaper but guns MIGHT be more difficult. I tried to buy a couple of guns at a sporting goods store (Decathlon) but the shop told me I needed 2 licenses. 1 for the GUN and a second to hunt with it...they could sell me one without the 2nd, but not the 1st. I dug a bit deeper, seems like a gun law, fires a projectile, etc. Wasn't happening. YMMV, and maybe contacting a spearshop might yield a different result.

That's just in Decathlon and it's a new thing.

By the way, there's lots more better options in Italy. I know what I'm saying.

you do not need a license to buy, a license is recommended but insurance is required

in Rome go to “ Emporio del pescatore “. Piazza dell’emporio. You will find everyting, high quality, good prices and he may even be able to arrange shipping. Fabio, the owner , is a great guy and excellent spearo.

Decathlon people are incompetent.

Re: Purchases in Europe while traveling

Just posting my recent experience and what happened...I was in Decathlon for another reason and when I noticed they had $20 Beuchat guns on sale. I tried to buy a couple hole guns that would fit in my checked bag. They required a license, I don’t know why someone here would say that that wasn’t my experience. Just giving a heads up.

YMMV =Your Mileage May Vary = you might get a different result.

Marco’s suggestion is what I would recommend as well. Local shop, locally owned, and motivated to make it happen for you.

L'Emporio is a great option. They have everything you might need and Fabio is a great guy.
