Re: 40"+ ling from today

My biggest Mendocino area ling so far, didn't have a scale but it measured 40 1/2". I'd guess around 30#s. Shot 20' +/- deep. I was in an area with lots of small blues so I was I was on the lookout for lings. I had just finished checking some deeper cracks when I ran face to face with this one. Looked real big underwater! Made a frontal head shot with a riffe bottom gun, didn't stone it but slowed it down enough to get ahold of it and brain it.
Fianscee beer battered and cooked up a portion of it that night, it was killer.

Ling Cod

Ling Cod and Black Rock Fish are the predominant fish we spear up here in the Puget Sound, and off the coast at Neah Bay.

Cod is basically fish & chips taste. I prepare it several different ways, just to do something different then the ole' fish & chips routine.

It is a fairly soft, white meat.

They look menacing, but they are a bottom fish, and opportunistic predators. Gulpers! The best kill approach is straight down on them in the back of the head. If you are prowling around on the bottom and see one and go for it, you will get a meat shot and it will run on you.

20 lbs or so is a good fish. The whopper 40 lbers are more rare, and are the breeders, so we tend to just let them bee...
