Re: Rest easy Karl P. Keller
Karl died diving and was having an epic day in the Bahamaas with good friends. It does not seem that his death was due to blackout. Karl had swam to the boat but was not able to board and due to some problem ended up sinking back into the water. His friends retrieved him and Karl was still responding a little when his friends got him back up but Karl's condition deteriorated. His friends made prodigious efforts to resuscitate him. I've barely shed a tear in my life over the loss of even my parents but that's not true in this case. There is a hole in my life because one of the finest, most preposterous, frustrating, delightful, crazy guys is not calling me with another hair-brained scheme.

Re: Rest easy Karl P. Keller
I'm still in shock. I was in Karl's shop the day before he left as he was helping me get stuff together for a trip over to the Bahamas as well. Karl was a true friend and I feel lucky that I was so close to him. The sport of spearfishing has lost a great one.
If there is any solace from what I heard he had a great day diving as well. He was doing what he loved and using his polespear he made in his favorite place to dive the Bahamas. He had a all-time day and shot a lot of nice fish. You will be truly missed my close Friend Karl.

Re: Rest easy Karl P. Keller
Condolences for Karl’s family.
I received one of his spears today. He was kind enough to email me the shipping label and anticipated arrival info Friday. He went on to ask for pictures of my trip. That’s the act of a standup guy, I hung my head down when I saw the big white tube at my front door today… |

RIP Karl. Godspeed to him and his family. He was a great guy... I got to dive with him on a few occasions and he make me one of his wonderful knives...
Peace, Errol

Re: Rest easy Karl P. Keller
I received some text and calls Sunday evening about this. A very tragic thing to happen. I feel for his family. I knew Karl but only on the phone and through texts and emails I have many friends that said he is a great guy and I do agree , standup guy generous, do anything for you. Very saddened by his death. When I was told of his death Sunday Pulmonary Embolism was mentioned. As a paramedic ,now that I heard about the decreasing status , I do agree it probably was a PE Possibly diving related. I don't know if he had a history of blood clots but it surely sounds like a case of severe pulmonary embolism which is often fatal if severe. Minor cases are treatable. Severe is uncommon and usually fatal. I feel for the guys on
the boat and his family. |

Re: Rest easy Karl P. Keller
Condolences for Karl’s family, glad he was out doing what he enjoyed...
I enjoyed my multiple phone chats with him, and text chats on diving and machining tech info. He sure had a lot of energy to develop his ideas. I was going to call him last week, to chat about a different knife concept. Wish I would have now. This is a big shock to me and many others.

What a tough loss it has been for everyone whose life has been touched by Karl. I was with him on his last day in the Bahamas. It is comforting to know that his last day was outstanding. He was doing what he loved - spearing fish in the Bahamas with friends... and crushing it! I put together a video from our trip:

Re: Rest easy Karl P. Keller
I met him occasionally, and recently got knives from him and talked about blades.... last week chatted about accessories.... always a very nice guy and gentle person..
Death happens and is never welcome at a young age, I hope we will know what really caused it , to learn and, may be, prevent some. PE, Pneumothorax, Miocardial ischemia are some possibilities, but may be else.
