reel malfunction at 80 feet, woohoo

So, I encounter the first school of yellowtail of the season. I’m at 24 meters, not an exceptional freediving dept, but then it depends what you have to do at 24 meters. My problem, one that can plagues all spearfishermen using reels, is that my reel line was tangled at the tip of my speargun. I let you see what happens...

Nice video, but I have to disagree with rooster fish. Breaded and deep fried is very good. You must bleed it though.

Regarding your reel problem, you could've grab the line between the reel and the line guide and let it run in your hand. That'll give you half the reel capacity to surface. Or get a belt reel and have it permanently attached to your gun. For me is a must when fishing with reels for big fish.

...Give some thought to dumping the line guide...It restricts your directional movements and is just one more safety issue to deal with..Us old timers learned long ago to keep gear as simple as possible.
...We also dumped reel locks, enclosed muzzles and safety locks on speargun triggers for the same reasons. Underwater, your llfe is measured in half-seconds, not seconds or minutes...
...Another safety issue is reels with bulb-shaped knobs. They will catch a loop of line, snag and your gun can be yanked from your grasp, losing the gun to a large fish...We replace the knob with a smooth cylinder-shaped knob that will not snag the line or kelp. Sometimes, it is just the small things that give you an edge in survival...
