What a great adventure! Thanks for sharing. I've been out of the water much of this summer chasing salmon by hook and line. Would love to catch tuna one day.

Great work! I can't say I agree with some of your advice though - I think straight shafts are better than slip tips. Slip tips cut through the meat easier I reckon. Also, I think a shorter powerful gun is the answer, as with a shorter gun the fish come in closer. Next season I am going to be experimenting with a 90cm roller gun. I reckon you need manoeuvrability. You are right in that they move deceptively fast. Skipjack tuna are even faster!
Nice catch, great experience

Bad ass guys congrats! You have answered my obsessed questions in my head with a big yes for OR spearing. I had a near miss experience in CA last month, fish were up and then dropped before I hit the water. Was hoping for a revenge session in Newport next year.

Re: Oregon spearos - Albacore Tuna Success!

wow leigh you sure have came a long way in the spearfishing in the past couple years, I remember I took the picture of your first fish in Front of dan's camping spot.

Last month I went out I'll make a trip report when I get more time I did not get one though.
Yet I finally went and got all the spearfishing gear for free diving , except for the new gun it's not finished yet. But I did a couple days of diving with it, and so now that I have to work out a few problems, one being since when I dive here on scuba I'm fine but being out on the ocean I think I end up getting seasick sitting on top of the water breathing up.

Of course I haven't Free dived in my backyard yet to actually rule that in or out yet.
Ya know it is coming I just need some time and cut a few more pounds. Starting to heal and get my strength back so it shouldn't be too much longer.

But leigh I know what it feels like to see them yellowtails come close, and just to see a bunch of them I never had one come real close and they were smaller.

Not sure if the tuna still going to keep running if it's colder now in Oregon, of course that's just my guess.
But here in Washington the tuna guys have not been going out that far either, of course now that its colder that has probably changed also.

If I move to OR I was hoping to hook up with some guys. I have a boat that is good on calmer days for about 3-4 guys.

Koah roller for blue water range

I'm planning on getting a Koah 110 blue water roller gun soon, as I discovered last Sept that my 120 non-roller euro was pretty inadequate for albacore range. The Koah will be good for Baja, SoCal bluewater too. I've researched the 3 handle configs and lengths. I already got a high-pressure float I didn't have for our albacore trip.
