6/5/11 Big Sur Report

Dove Big Sur today with Bryan and Jonah. Drove by a half dozen spots that were flat calm and looked beautiful and decided to dive a spot completely exposed to the weather because we were sure it'd be worth it... it was bumpier in the water than it looked from up on the hill... on the plus side, we had 25ft vis, 52 degree water. Bryan speared a nice ling and I got a couple olives.

Prior to the dive, we were looking out over a pasture on the side of the road and saw a bunch of big white things amongst the grass. We all agreed that they were definitely mushrooms and most likely puffballs. So after the dive, we stopped and checked them out. There were probably 2 dozen puffballs ranging in size from baseball sized to maybe 12 or so inches in diameter. Knowing that puffballs degrade quickly, we picked as many as we thought we might eat in the near future and hit the road.

All in all, a rougher day than expected, but not without its successes.

I was much more confident about our ability to hunt when I was looking down at the waves from the cliff than I was when I was looking up at the waves from the water.

After SCI and this I think we are ushering in the new sport of white water spearfishing.

the whitewater part might have been the funnest part of the dive

Sitting on the kitchen counter at the moment... I think I'll look up a recipe & cook 'em tonight.

I've had them before & they're pretty good, just not as flavorful as a bolete or chanterelle.

Had some with eggs, cheese and a buttered tortilla last night. They're good, but not too exciting. They have a nice velvety texture and a real mild mushroomy flavor. They're definitely not the time of item to be the feature in a dish, but they make a nice compliment.
