FWC Meeting February 13- new management designations

I wanted to inform everyone on the board- Florida divers, watermen, spearfishing men and women- that there will be an opportunity to provide public input at the February 2013 FWC Commission meeting to be held at SeaWorld Park, 7007 SeaWorld Drive, Orlando, FL, 32821 on February 2013 at 8:30-4:00pm.

The dive community could use your presence to provide the commission a diverse perspective on pending regulations, specifically the designation of sportfish and gamefish categories. The open wording of these categories could set the stage for future regulations that impact all recreational subsistence fisherman, many of whom depend on fishing to help feed their families (whether spearing, hook and line or cast-net) by granting future FWC officials unlimited authority to designate ANY species as "catch and release" regardless of the health of a given species' most recent stock assesment or the food value of a species to recreational fishermen.

Please join us promote the economic and environmental benefits of careful and intentional diver selective harvest (no bycatch, no habitat destruction, no bait, no discard mortality). We believe subsistence fishermen who fish to feed our families have equal merit to recreational inclusion as "catch and release" sport fisherman if a stock assessment shows a particular species is being sustainably managed and in no danger of overfishing.

I do not see that subject on the official agenda and did not hear them talk about it unless I was outside the room after the sportfish/gamefish issue.

Thanks everyone who attended this meeting. I was unable to attend the meeting Today but I plan on being at the one in April when the Collier Spearfishing ban will be on the agenda.
