Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)
From my experience , I see some of it every year but can always move north/south or east/west and get out of it. From what we seen last Saturday is pretty scary 90' real cloudy 5' viz, 60' SE was snotty and 35' farther south was real snotty also. Top to bottom the Sunday before to the worst viz I've seen out 35 miles EVER. Hope this isn't going to be a bad red tide season!

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)
5/9 20 miles SW of Bayport in 35ft. New spot for me. TTB vis. Horizontal just as good. No brown hair algae or whatever you call that stuff everyone is seeing. Mostly juvenile fish. Managed 2 good hogs. Ran 20 back north so almost due west out of Bayport to a reliable spot in 45ft. Algae everywhere, no fish, no bait! Arrrr. Came in to 35ft and found a new spot on the Garmin. Went down and managed 2 reds, few more hogs and couple mangs. Mom got her fish fry! Still had quite a bit of algae. Tried to go out of Homosassa 5/16 at 9:30 the wind was howling from the east. Had to turn around and basically idle back it was so rough. Didn't get down. How do weathermen keep their jobs!!

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)
Monday 5-18:
One ledge 75-85' no moss and a school of 35-55" AJs. One locker filled. Third dive was 45' SW Veterans LOADED with snapper and sheepies. The Gags were off the chart big, read BIG. We killed it. Looks like the algae bloom is dislodging from the bottom and vis is holding steady at 50' above the growth. Should be an epic July 1st. |

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)
Went out to 3 mile and 1 mile out of AMI yesterday. Got a decent 35" cobia on 3 mile and we both maxed on nice snapper and got a few hogs. Saw some big kings but couldn't get within range. visibility was about 20 to 25 feet in both spots. saw some real nice gags. Great day on the water.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)
Will be headed out of Tampa this weekend to some new spots. Will post reports but wanted to ask what weather reports...apps...buoy info...ect folks in our region use before heading out? I got the crap kicked out of me the last 2 weekends in row, had to abort trip on 5/16 despite weather reports of wind 9mph or less and 2ft or less seas. Wrong!!! I could have kicked the weather mans a$$ after that. Thanks.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)
Dove some ledges around Veterans Reef in 55' on Tuesday(5/19). Dove south county last Friday. Viz is still top to bottom. The "gumbo"/algae/whatever that crap is was not as bad on the north county ledge but still present. Fish are thin this year but still able to limit on hogfish and found a keeper red grouper(22"). We also found a 35' Lewmar plow anchor with about 20' of chain .

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)
Hey everyone I have a question!! We sent diving last weekend out of Clearwater Pass and the weekend prior out of Ft Desoto and noticed what looks like a whole bunch of thick tumble weed looking sludge on the bottom and all over the reefs, any idea what this is and will othe gone anytime soon?? It appears the larger fish seem to stay away from it as we didn't have any luck finding any keeper grouper or hogfish as we normally do?!? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)
It's algae, As water temps rise organisms grow! It's not big deal as long as the end result isn't red tide! Mainly happens inshore. At a spot two weeks ago in 120' on the pipeline, viz was clear and no algae!
