Early Riffe Speargun

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this forum and looking to get back into spearfishing. Its been at least 20 years and I look forward to this forum to help me get situated. Here's my question. I have an old Riffe speargun, possibly late 70's or early 80's #3. (I believe). It has a cut down Australian trigger. I could probably have this gun cleaned up/overhauled a bit or do I keep it as a wall hanger? I have even been thinking of selling it to get a brand new gun. Are there collectors for these types of guns and if so, does anyone have any idea of its value?

Thanks in advance. (I was not sure to to post here or the main CA forum so I did both).

I would as go as far as saying that those bands need replacing... XD XD XD

Gun looks good but not my style. If I were you, I would keep it as a wallhanger and get a newer gun.

Nothing wrong with that gun the trigger might be a little harder to pull than the newer ones.

Re: Early Riffe Speargun

I came across one like it several years ago. I put new bands on it and used it for a season. I never could seem to be very accurate with it. Recoil caused the gun to rise and the shaft would be deflected low. I had been shooting a Biller 48 with pretty good success, but didn't get enough penetration on snapper unless real close. The Riffe definitely had the power and good penetration just didn't connect very often. I got a couple Mako guns and love them. Best of both worlds. I hung the Riffe up over the fireplace.

Re: Early Riffe Speargun

Thanks~ Jill Riffe told me this was an early 80's gun by her dad. I'll probably clean it up a bit and keep it as a wall hanger. It looks like there are so many good speargun makers now so I will have a few options to choose from.

That is an Undersee grip handle and trigger mech, so this is a historic piece which will grow more in value with the efflux of time, hence you need to cherish it. Jay lived in Australia for a time and brought back the Undersee parts to build his own gun once he had seen the Australian guns such as the Undersee "Reefmaster".

Very cool! Thanks for the response! I've been wanting to get back into spearfishing and have been considering oiling it up and updating some parts. Maybe its better to just get a new gun.

That gun will perform as well as it ever did if you put new bands on it, but it may be too valuable to use. I have posted a reference to it on the "All About Guns" forum where it will certainly attract some interest, more than you might imagine.
