New to spearfishing
Hello everyone, I'm very new to spearfishing and don't really know anyone here (Gulf Shores) who dives or surfs or anything really. So, if anyone is willing to invite me on a boat i can chip in on gas, and shore diving sucks period. I also would like to dive with some experienced divers and learn proper techniques. So if anyone is willing please pm me. It's been flat for weeks and I'm dying inside need to get into the water. Cheers

Have you taken a class? Most of the guys on here don't want to shoot with someone that has not been certified.

No sir, I have not yet. Very soon tho. I get it. It's like going surfing with someone who doesn't know how to swim. Doing the class very soon.

If your in gulf shores, you need to visit Down under dive shop. You will meet both surfers and free dive spearfishermen. I think they offer free dive instruction also. Been wanting to take it, but i been free diving over 30 years already without it.

Yeah. I met Michael and Mitch. Dive class is 350$ and then I have to wait for someone else to sign up to because it takes two plus instructor. So far I've dove at Alabama point got my diveflag ran over. We need some waves. But it's summer. So I fish and attempt to dive whenever possible.

You'll be in good hands with those guys at Down Under. If someone else doesn't signup and you want to get into a class check out our schedule too. If you're ever in the Destin area and want to talk diving/spearing stop by the shop and say hi!

If you can swing going to destin I highly recommend Joe at Benthic. I know a lot of good freedivers that have been certified through him. Also, once you do take one of the classes shoot me a PM or talk to Michael as there is a group of us that train in gulf shores every week.

Were you able to take the class yet at Down Under? I'm thinking of taking one there too.

Re: New to spearfishing
I did my OW at Down Under, Jim was a good instructor and made sure that I was comfortable and actually understood. I wound up with a different swim-buddy almost every day, weather & vis screwed us up from the end of August until October.
It's cheaper in Pensacola for the time being, Dive Pros on 98 is offering a Scuba Diver course for $269. I just did my Enriched Air course there, good instructor, liked the environment. |
