Catalina Squid will draw Gamefish: 12/11/22

...Just returned from an island run for lobster using hoop nets. To stay on track, I did not take rods or spearguns (broken bone in hand was the deciding factor)..Mid-channel, we encountered hundreds of porpoise and some Russos kicking up the water, with lots of birds overhead. Several Finback whales and Greys also in the mix...
...Close to the island, were hundreds more porpoise, more birds, many sea lions and more Russos slicing across the surface as they attacked for their dinner. Setting up below Empire Landing, our fishfinder lit up bright blue as we metered a bottom of solid squid nests and some larger marks in a red horizontal "S" squiggle that indicate white sea bass cruising thru..
....Long story short, it was the worst nite of lobster hunting I can remember...Zero lobster, both shallow and as deep as 120'. By 1:30 a.m., my injured hand was throbbing and I turned in. My son, not wanting to be a little kid loser, continued dropping and pulling nets until 4:30 a.m. One has to admire his tenacity, but questions arise about sanity...Four hours later, HARBOR PATROL WAS KNOCKING ON THE CABIN TO COLLECT THE MOORING FEE... Two more days of sleep and I will be fine. Fortunately, as old age approaches, I had installed a Ace line hauler (electric winch), which makes lobster hooping far easier!
...Later, after analyzing the situation, I concluded that a full moon and the many predators up in shallow water (often 20') caused the bugs to stay in their holes...
...Water was calm and clear with a good 50' vis. Water temp was 61, a temp seabass like. I think seabass season is here, if the commercial boys don't scoop all of the squid up.

Hi Bob, Thanks for the update. Had not heard much info on Catalina recently. I am looking forward to diving out at the island next week if the weather permits. All 3 of my boys will be home and want to chase bugs. Cheers, Kadman
