Re: Speargun choice for RI Stripers
Aloha
I normally install them at the time of purchase and we do it as a courtesy. The barrel plug is set in deeper so no water enters the main tube (bouyancy chamber). I use the forward handle hole and only drill one hole in the barrel. On the barrel end I use a custom washer keeps the reel flush up against the tube. This particular one is in white but now we use only black nylon washers.

Re: Speargun choice for RI Stripers
I have a JBL northwest My dive partner has a 42 in biller, the only issue we have had was with the stock bands on the AB biller. Juced up the power by throwing some short bands on the biller and now do not have a problem with either, and we both have take our fair share of stripers. I would not go with a flopper unless you KNOW you will not be tempted to shoot the taug in the rocks. 4" 2 wing fixed tip works for pretty much everything i have ever shot, did manage to lose some taug with 2" wings, which is why we made a change.

Re: Speargun choice for RI Stripers
Thanks for the info everyone, finally decided to go with an Aimrite 90. So my final question, when do the stripers start running in RI? I know i can usually guarantee large bass in the mouth of the CT River come the 2nd week of May but am not familiar with RI waters. The normal spots we would try for blackfish in RI include the eastern side of Beavertail Park, the breakers out from point judith or off of watch hill. We also hit Fisher's Island but is spearing for stripers legal in NY?

lots of fish around. how big do you want? legal fish should be available when the water cleans up in a week or so, never mind another storm is on the way.

Re: Speargun choice for RI Stripers
spearfishing for striped bass is legal in new york as long as you follow the normal hook and line regulations as far as size is concerned. the waters around fishers island produce big fish from the mid/end of may, all the way through october, witht he majority of the big fish coming towards the middle to end of season. good luck to you this season and with your very nice new gun.

i had a jbl for a few years but my roommate recently bought a 90cm omersub excalibur and it made my jbl look like crap. the gun came recommended from the owner of ocean state scuba in jamestown. i plan on buying the 82cm model

Re: Speargun choice for RI Stripers
I was reviewing the regs for this year in CT, NY and RI and was suprised to see RI has noted as of 4/1/07 there is no recreational fluking until they review the regulations. Any word on when the final regs will be released? Also was suprised to see the Blackfish season in NY is only from 10/1 - 5/31/07.
