Wet Suit Recommendations
I was wondering what the good people here in SE Florida use for wet suits and what they recommend. Thicknesses, brands, time of year and where (inshore, beach dives, offshore). I have been using a camo under armor long sleeve with black board shorts with some success, but it feels like it's time to do things "the right way". Thanks in advance!

Re: Wet Suit Recommendations
Camo doesn't make a difference, at least in my experience. Cool guy factor is definitely there.
Once the water gets around 70 to 78 I wear a 3mm 1 piece, I keep a 2mm hooded vest for longer dives or if it's really cold. Summer I wear a t shirt , rashguard or 1mm black neoprene top. Occasionally I get out an open cell free dive suit that's compressed to hell and back , easier to move around in though. For the record I use all this on scuba, if I do any free diving it's in shallow water.

Re: Wet Suit Recommendations
I dive a 5mm Henderson aqualock. it is a little thick for the summer, but I work in the dive industry so i'm underwater for long periods of time and I've never been cold.

5mm with a core warmer underneath in the winter time. 3mm for the summer.

Re: Wet Suit Recommendations
I think there are a lot of good brands out there if you are willing to pay the money for a better suit. A cheap hood will make you a lot warmer regardless of the suit.
I have a Bare that is freakin awesome and i just picked up a pinnacle (cheaper 3 mil without the merino wool) that was totally worth the money. |

Re: Wet Suit Recommendations
Bare is good as well as oneill. both super soft.
Pinnacles are good suits too provided they fit your body, some of their suits have a very specific fit.

Re: Wet Suit Recommendations
i used closed cell suits for a few years and then tried an open cell Mako suit. The open cell is as warm as a 5 mil closed cell and is less bulky than a 3 mil closed cell. Much more comfortable. I wont be buying any more closed cell suits.
I think the camo matters if you are free diving (any color other than black is good, you want a non-shark color). All colors are the same for scuba since you have so much other stuff on. |

Re: Wet Suit Recommendations
I use a 3mm open cell mako suit. I am happy with it. You will need to learn the ins and outs of putting them on with lube or conditioner. Having a wetsuit greatly increases your breath hold ability.

Re: Wet Suit Recommendations
I'll be free diving. Mostly off the beach or on a couple ICW spots.

3mm should be good for the colder portions of the year, later maybe board shorts and wetsuit top... $215.00 Yamamoto Rubber, with pads and knife pocket....

Re: Wet Suit Recommendations
The makos were so highly recommended by the good people here at SB that I looked at those first. They have green camo 3 mil open cell suits on clearance for $85. I ordered one of those. Can't beat that deal, I think. They also have 1.5 and 3.5 closed cell 1 pieces for around $60. Might be good for a backup or warmer suit.
