My winter custom fish cooler project

Here is what I have done this winter to keep the boredom away. I thought I'd share this with you. It fits perfectly in my Tarpon 160. It's good for at least 3 big togs and two bass up to 40 inches along with 10 pounds of ice. It is designed to hold the fins on top of it. Can't wait to go down your way when the season gets started!!!

Re: My winter custom fish cooler project

What did you cover the cooler with. And also how did you smooth it out so nicely. I noticed the was some black material in one of the building photos. Is that some type of sealer or is it bare foam.

Very very cool stuff right there.

Re: My winter custom fish cooler project

Thanks. I made the cooler out of foam. I used two type of foam, one pink (outside) and the other dark grey (Inside). The only reason I used two kind of foam is I didn't find the thickness that I wanted in just one kind.

I then covered the whole thing with about 3 layers of fiberglass. I sanded it and then applied a couple of layers of gelcoat (thick resin without cloth), repairing the imperfections with very thick resin.

I sanded again and painted it.

We should have a pool for the season's best mod or customization. Prize in beers of course... Anyway this is my vote! How much does it weigh?

Re: My winter custom fish cooler project

Haha! Thanks.

It's a bit heavy. Almost 20 pounds. But It should keep fish and/or beer cold all day long on the water.

Fish get too warm in Canada?
why didn't you just buy a soft, fish bag cooler

Re: My winter custom fish cooler project

Haha! It's not for Canada. Here you could just leave your catch in the water...
When I dive in Florida or Baja, I'm on the water for 5-8h at a time. In the blazing sun, the fish bags are just not good enough. I've tried.
Plus, when I come back to the car, with this cooler I can leave the fishes in it and not hurry to get back to campground.

And last but not least : I really needed a project for the long winter...
