How to clean hazy perscription lenses?
My prescription lenses get hazy after a couple years. Usually i toss them, but am stuck in Bimini with a new mask and old hazy lenses. Anyone have experience cleaning them? I've tried: - soaking in bleach overnight - soaking in fresh lemon juice overnight - soaking in vinegar overnight - buffing with baking soda, ... all to no avail. Your expertise is much appreciated! |

I don't have direct experience with what you are dealing with, but you might try automotive polishing compound, not rubbing compound. Maguire's Plastx would probably work well, but doubt if you can find it in Bimini.
Put a pretty heavy load of compound on a cloth or pad and just rub and rub until the compound is gone. Putting the compound on, letting it dry, and then buffing it off does little to nothing.

Re: How to clean hazy perscription lenses?
Are these lenses bonded onto a front plate? My Dad had a mask with flat ground front lenses bonded onto a tempered glass plate. If the glue between the two glasses deteriorates then this gives that effect. From memory the lenses were applied with heat by heating up the glass. The dive mask was a Vedo with two lenses and not one plate, but as the lenses were secured by metal rings that screwed on from the rear they had to be a certain thickness on the periphery which was much thinner than the bonded lenses which were slightly smaller in diameter in order to provide a securing flange of glass.
