Whishtoyo
means rainbow in chumash!
here's the deal. i have befriended the local chumash indian group in malibu. last night we had a fundraiser to help them recreate a village next to leo(pt zero's). they are currently supporting the mlpa and/or making it a tribal co-management. all the info they have received so far has only come from the surfrider foundation and from the mlpa group. i spoke with them a bit before and again briefly last night about my local knowledge of the ocean conditions explaining to them the ban we fought for against gill netting, things like the hubb's research program and the record numbers coming back finally. they are willing to sit and listen to our side of the story now. for one they do not want to see the area closed as long as it seems sustainable. they live right on the bluff and as i explained to them, they too will soon no longer be allowed to hunt there! they are very much into passing down their traditions to youth and most all of them gravitated with my son in the evening. their passions are for fishing & hunting instead of buying from a market. i have helped them set up (ya i know) a couple of hoop nets just to regain that taste for lobster. believe me they are into the idea of free diving and hunting with a spear!! i want to set up a date so we can sit down and discuss. i need support from someone in here with a better factual view? anyone interested and has kids, bring them! its a great experience to see the way they lived, hang out in the village with fires burning, play some instuments and look out over the ocean! last year they built a tomal(canoe) and i am expecting them to use my launch the next time they decide to venture out. also, if anyone from up north has extra ab shells and willing to donate, i will pay for shipping. thank you, jp |

Re: Whishtoyo
I got a bunch of big ones you can have. I may be down in your neck of the woods after turkey day and can drop them off, or I can ship them to you if I don't make it.

Re: Whishtoyo
Hey Jamie. I called you yesterday about the shells I brought down for you. I'll be in Long Beach on Sunday morning if you'd like to grab them.

Jamie that sounds awesome. PM sent. I don't think anyone should give you crap about helping them with hoopnetting. It's a great thing to reach out any way possible.

Re: Whishtoyo
cant tell you guys how fired up i am about this!!
thinkin now we turn this into a wsb/lobster bbq on the site!! i know they would be down for it. thanks everyone for the positive responce. i left them a message to call me back and set a time. the tomal is on site and its been inlayed in ab. they sealed the boards up with asphaltum(sp). the traditional huts are about 10ft high, 15ft across, fire pits in the center and a small 2'x2' center hole for the smoke to escape. last night i layed in one and was toasty!! even offered us to come back and stay the night in one i will keep you posted... |

Re: Whishtoyo
Very cool Jamie. Sucks to think that when I hear the word "Chumash", all I think of is that F-ing casino in the SY valley. What you are looking at is culture and heritage - slot machines/poker tournaments are not.

Re: Whishtoyo
Imagine that, The Native American People being lied to, and stripped of their way of life. I guess history has taught some of us nothing...... Sounds interesting. Thanks for your efforts!!
