Re: FWC considering Banning Spearfishing in State and Federal

FYI- they are putting a law in place with ZERO studies- this is purely based on the complaints of key flats guides.
Basically - whoever make sthe most stink wins-
they hava about 100 people who are super vocal about it.
Can we beat that? I think so.
Base your arguments on the fact that there are no studies to support a decline and that YOU DO NOT SEE A DECLINE ON THE REEF!!
Don't bother argueing about spear vs hook and line because this law will not discriminate on that- what they are doing is trying to close the entire fishery indefinately without even planning a study- much less doing one FIRST>
The squeaky wheel gets the grease on this one!

Mason.Smith@MyFWC.com is in charge of this barracuda closure and wants anyone who didn't attend the meeting to email him directly about closing the barracuda. Note the period between the Mason.Smith.
The survey was actually for the people who attended the meeting.
So, for maximum effect- email him directly and ask for cuda to remain open until a study is preformed - at the LEAST.

Re: FWC considering Banning Spearfishing in State and Federal

I did not attend the meeting and I did not take the survey.
However the total closure of the species to spearfishing interests me.

With regard to the West Palm Beach area, in particular :-

Around 1995-98 I vividly recall having large shoals of barracuda on the Rockpile/Playpen, and on the recently sunken boat just upstream (Princess ?).
Most of the wrecks in the area had good quantities of barracuda. When they sunk the cross current barge, there were also large numbers.

At that time and until around 2003/4 I believed there an over-abundance and never ending supply of barracuda. Having acquired a non-restricted species commercial license I freedived and shot a great deal, just for the gas money, help pay for the monthly boat payments etc.

There was steady market at around $1/lb and I clearly remember bringing in up to 700 lbs a trip.
I never took them home for food and only lightly inquired which market the Cuda were destined for.
The adrenaline rush of spearing, managing the floatline, and subduing the Cuda was, in its way addictive, and on top of the pocket money was reason to carry on nailing them.
I did not replenish my commercial license after I sold my Twin Vee.

Now 10-15 years afterwards, I am not out on the briney as much as I used to be but occasionally every month or so, have a trip out to the shallower spots (not deeper than 60ft)

I now notice the apparent decline of barracuda in and around the WPB area and especially so on the more popular spots.
Perhaps on the not so popular and deeper spots, they are still in abundance? Would really like to hear that confirmed??
When I watch some of the numerous Spearboard videos from the deeper wrecks in the Se area, I do not see the shoals of barracuda that were once around.
Perhaps on the bouy's and the wrecks up in the St Lucie they are still as thick as I remember them??

I am slightly ashamed of my commercial days (it really was just for fun and pocket money and not to sustain a family) and if anything I would like to see a more careful issuing of commercial licenses that includes barracuda.
At one time, anyone with $50 could pick up a commercial license for Cuda.

I hope that we do not get to the stage of totally banning the spearing of the species. I would really like to witness my grandson being able to take a big Cuda.

Mike.

I didn't take the survey. Resistance is futile. It's just like people that refuse to engage in politics and the future of their existence. I don't think about things like this. Surely, our gov't knows what's best for us. I mean, really...why else do we give them such a large percentage of our hard earned money? It's so our appointed overlords can care for us properly. After all, they always know better.

Resistance is not futile Marcus. As I mentioned, the only reason we can now take Permit and Africans is because we showed up and made some excellent and consistent arguments to their regulatory board members at a meeting.

I think they will listen to us, but if we say nothing, we will get nothing.

Your attitude is disappointing.
