To put things in perspective - other than Audry, no freediver (strictly apnea) has ever died during either a record attempt or competition and other than Pipin, no freediver has ever had a safety diver die. Pipin has the sole distinction of being the only diver to ever have either of these 2 things happen (never mind both!) during his watch. These statements are not rumors, they are simply facts.
