10/22/11 Abalone dive report from the north

Here is a report my buddy shannon typed up from our trip north on the NCUH site, "he gave an ok to re post"

Hey all,

a report from last Thursday. Matt, our buddy Tony and I met up north to hunt big abs. Launched at dawn and made a long run to the trophy grounds. Water was nice with some wind chop. Looked at several spots known to produce monsters and settled into a place with poor vis, like about 1-2 feet. We swam in close and started working. One abalone was found and it was by Matt. He poked his pin head into a hole and there was a big ab. He called me over for a second opinion. I made two dives on the giant hanging on the roof and confirmed it to be a nice ab around 10 1/4". Matt pulled it first attempt and that was that. Nice way to break the ice and get some momentum going.

Moved around to a couple more areas and didn't find anything impressive. Decided on another spot, anchored the boat and swam in. We all began to find some big abs but no tens. Tony was hunting for an eleven and was tenacious throughout the day. I decided to work deeper water and around noon, found a super nice ab that was nicely over ten. Matt came over and filmed the pull and after a couple of efforts to get the ab out of the hole(narrow opening), I had my 19th ten inch ab of the season. The ab would later take the calipers out to 10.38 " and a hair under ten pounds. Was super stoked. Tony ended up pulling a nice ten and after watching the red tide descend on us, we headed for home. THe boat motor acted up and it took some time to get back. A ripping trip with two excellent divers and buddies!

Try not to I only have 4 under ten this year and all those are all 9 3/4 plus. I prefer to hunt the bigger one's 10+, there are allot of times I go home with nothing.

Re: 10/22/11 Abalone dive report from the north

Its great to hear stories of selective hunting. I find myself these days passing on more fish than I shoot because I'm being highly selective. I guess I have a few honey holes now and I'm trying to groom them and keep them really healthy.

There hard to find in miami because people shoot anything that moves and usually more than they need. It was quite depressing to dive here my first few months because all the "easy" reefs are so fished out.

Way to be a good steward of the resource!
