Buck with broken leg
This isn't the right place for this but I know yall know the answer..
A buck tried to jump my dad's deer fence and broke its leg. What is the legality of shooting it and harvesting the meat? Would you just snap pics of it to show what happened and then put the beast out of its misery and take it to a butcher so as not to waste the meat? Fast replies are appreciated! |

Re: Buck with broken leg
I would call the state DNR or your local animal control officer

Re: Buck with broken leg
I dont know the legal answer, but just hurry up and shoot it, and clean it yourself, although you've probably already shot it... Hopefully... I have always wondered the legality of harvesting a buck like this, or accidentally hitting one...

Re: Buck with broken leg
Nothing its still there I think. The other relevant detail is they think it's a two point buck only so I can't just get a tag quickly.

Re: Buck with broken leg
The processor will not take it without a harvest id #, so if you don't have a tag...and you put it out of it's misery, taking it to a commercial processor is not a good idea. I would end it's suffering and go ahead and butcher it myself. A call to the DNR is a good idea.

Re: Buck with broken leg
Deer are amazingly tough creatures & 3 legged deer do survive, depending on predator densities in the area & other factors...
Legally, you need a tag or you are at the mercy of the CO's. Ethically, it's your call. |

Re: Buck with broken leg
call a rescue group or shoot it.
Were it me, I would put it out - shoot it, or if I was in an area where people would wonder about the gunshot, a quick blow with an axe to the back of the head. No animal should suffer needlessly. Put it out of it's pain, clean it yourself, and feed your family. May not be 100% legal, but ethically you shouldn't let the animal suffer, and once it's dead, letting the meat go to waste is pretty bad too. |

Re: Buck with broken leg
slit its throat remove the meat if you have a tag, tag it, if not get a tag then tag it but for *****s sake kill it already dont let it suffer....commercial processor? honestly if this happened at my house i wouldnt bother tagging it but i live in the woods basically. we've had a deer get caught by the foot in a fence but it was a 6 pointer in the summer and it didnt break its leg so i cut the fence and let it go

Re: Buck with broken leg
You legally need a tag to kill it. Even if you pick up a dead deer on the side of the road you legally need to tag it. If it were me it would be dead and hanging in my garage by now. If you want to process the deer yourself and don't have anyone to show you how look it up on Youtube. There will be a dozen videos on how to break down a buck.

Re: Buck with broken leg
Depending on where u r located, most deer zones r closed so u will not be able to purchase a tag. Call either fish and game or animal control. Deer are resilient animals and there r wildlife groups that rehab animals and provide care through veterinarians.

Re: Buck with broken leg
Shoot the deer. If you go with the knife option prepare to get your ass whipped.
