I'm spoiled by the speed of my Intrepid. I cruise at 40-45mph most calm days.

I'm looking at a Freeman or Compmillenia. But I'll still miss my dive door!!!

Re: Middle Grounds Hog Video

That's a legit concern. What's the weight difference between the Tideline, Prowler and Calcutta? I would think not a huge difference between them. FWIW I pulled my prior 27 Ameracat with my wife's V8 Dodge Durango without issue. Now not ideal for a long tow but still it was fine with decent trailer brakes.

Re: Middle Grounds Hog Video

Calm day we are more 35-40. Ran 30 on way to grounds trying to be smart on fuel for first trip out. I ran the last 20 miles from the grounds at 45 though getting 1.03 mpg because it was less head sea as we got closer to land and we were ready to get home.

And often we will tell the divers to both run the ledge downcurrent and we follow the bubbles. Then they don't have to backtrack into a strong current to find the anchor line or jug.

Just a thought.

What cat are you running? How did she do with a middle Grounds load? Speed/MPG out and back. I always have issues with having enough gas in my old Worldcat. I had to bring extra to go the far northwest Grounds.

It alawys help to get your heading when on the boat and take the consideration of which way the current is going, then when you get to the anchor get your heading there of the direction of the current and then head out, usually up current first for half your tank and then head 180 degrees back to the anchor. It helps a lot to use a compass and be able to navigate the ocean without having to pop your head up and figure out where the boat is.

It always best to have a smb and just dive while holding that, then whoever is on the boat has no excuse for losing your bubbles!

I never really understood the advantages of going more than 30 mph, until I started going out further distances, and of course when either weather or wife indicated the need for a speedy return to land

Tideline is about 7000-7500 including trailer, gas, gear, etc. Probably 750 - 1000 pounds more for the Prowler and Calcutta. Would be pushing the limit for me.

BUT for me the extra $$$ for 2-3 more feet and the extra space and room isn't justified. Most of the time it is either me and my wife fishing and scalloping/snorkeling, or me and at max 3 others diving/spearing. I think a well-laid out 23 foot cat would be just as roomy as my current 25 foot WA. The extra money saved, not to mention weight savings, ability to tow easier, and having 175s-200s capable of not only high WOT speed but lower RPMs at cruise, with great MPG, makes a lot more sense to me.
