Recall notice - we could have had a dead diver yesterday

So, my buddy, who is new to diving, took us out yesterday on his boat. He spent big $$ on a new Aqua Lung BC. When we hooked up his tank and reg it started leaking at the inflator - the button was stuck in the open position - tried to fix it on the boat, no luck. So he borrowed my BC and we had a nice day.

He took it in to the dive shop and surprise, surprise!

Replace inflators and all hoses every 5 years.

I always do gear check the night before. I also had some old Aqualung BC I had on loan from a buddy that had a broken schrader valve that caused it to stick open. In my OW class, I sort of remember that the instructor said BCDs inflate valves are designed to fail open? Or maybe it could fail open? And if that happens, spread yourself out and pull on your dump valves to slow the ascent.

You should really be able to kick to the surface with BC completely empty.

It's funny how we all have our own paradigms based on our training and experiences.

I probably would have dove with the inflator hose disconnected and orally inflated the BC if I felt the need to do so.

Glad nobody got hurt and you still had a good day

Technology is a crutch and should never replace skill. Glad everyone is ok. The above mentioned disconnected inflator hose trick is the ticket in that situation. Dove like that and without a BBC for years.

Yep, seems the high end inflators are the most trouble. I had a Halcyon fail 2nd time I used it and LDS replaced it with Zeagle, it too failed very soon and then replaced with regular "el cheapo" valve and no trouble for several years. Invest in an "El Cheapo" tool and take the valve apart periodically and apply silicone grease. You may also want to change the O rings to Viton if you use Nitrox -- it's hard to get them for the tiny ones inside. Also the "ElCheapo" uses regular tire Scharader valves and some of the high end use hard to find specialty scharader valves. I take a spare inflator valve with me in my save-a-dive box and the tool too. I have many times, just disconnected the hose and put a puff or 2 in the BC the old way.
