What did I miss?

I'm back in San Diego after living in Jacksonville for 3 years and looking to get back in the water. Figured I would sign in and get up to speed.

The CA forum looks completely dead. Barely any user names I recognize posting, J&J is now in Solana Beach, WTF else happened? They add more MLPA areas? Given how screwed up this state is it wouldn't surprise me.

Shame, nothing has seemed the same since returning "home", just worse.

No new closure areas. J&J moved closer to home for them, and I would assume to help save some money; the other location was very expensive. Diving is still the same; some places hold at different times, nothing out of the ordinary.
Coronados had a helluva year, YT was off the charts, and a few tuna were pulled at the island. Less BFT wanted to play for the divers, but there are monster fish out there for the H&L guys. A change in the fish habits, less breezers and much shorter duration foamers.

Re: What did I miss?

Been a slow year overall in the LJ kelp, but it's had its moments. A good run in June and another in September. Out of 30 shoredives (not counting bug dives) this year I shot 5 yellows and 0 WSB. Waiting for the ocean to calm down then back to the grind.

There's also been a lot of yellows being caught in the deeper water off OB/MB/PB/south LJ recently. Not much opportunity for spearos but great for anglers.

I think the coolest thing that happened while you were gone is this kid (fishiest dude I know) SHOT a 52 lb homeguard off crystal pier in fall 2019, with a tiny JBL speargun on a lobster dive lol. Same dude caught a 42 pounder off the pier last summer. There was also a marlin caught on a half day boat off LJ last summer.

Regarding lobster I haven't seen any good crawls this season. That's not to say there's few around, they just haven't been crawling like I've seen in previous years. Just gotta work a little harder for your limit.
