Sperfishing in Rio

Traveling to Rio de Janeiro at the end of May, and I can't seem to find any info on guides that can take me out spearfishing while I'm there.

Anyone have any information/links for guides that operate in or near the city?

Thanks!

Re: Sperfishing in Rio

I was in Rio during July and august of 2014 with my girlfriend at the time. I took a a small speargun and my gear. We ended up staying in Favella Vidigal because everything else was really expensive during the world cup (I still felt realy safethere). Right under the Favella is where praia Leblon is located. Its pretty much next to the Sheraton Hotel. In the afternoon I went down to the beach to look for fisherman who would take me out the next day. One guys offered to take me but the next morning I couldnt find him. I would suggest trying to do the same. I ended up just doing some shore diving and to my luck, I ran into a spearo on the beach that lived in the same favella that I was staying at. I left my girl to tan on the beach and me and him went shore diving and checked out some rock structures. We couldnt really find much but I still had a great time and made a new friend. A few day later I met the guyy again on the street and he told me he had shot a nice grouper. So I guess its all just luck. Dont expect the best visibility if you are shore diving. Maybe 10-15 at most. With depths around 5-12 meters. I would bring a gun between 60-80 cm if staying inshore. If you have any more questions you can contact me.

Thanks, Alejandro. Good tip! This is what I usually try to do when traveling some place new. Walk around at docks/on the beach to look for locals. Thanks again!

Go to Bar do Ze. Ask for Ze. He's an old buddy of mine from Indonesia. His dad was one of the first generation Spearfishermen there. He's point you in some directions. It's all about the current. Current from the South Blue and good. Current from the North or east. Dirty water. When it's blu there are yellowtail. There are also King Mackeral. I haven't been there in more than 10 years.

I went to Buzios for a few days too. Your best bet will be to go to the beach called "Praia de Joćo Fernandes." There is one main beachfront restaurant near where the taxis park. The owner of that restaurant spearfishes and has his own boat where he goes out on. Ask around for him. You will most likely find him in the late afternoon. I didnt get to go out with him because of time constraints (and girlfriend at the time) but maybe you can have a meal at his restaurant and ask to join him one morning. Good luck.
