Complaining about a lack of inexpensive Guns in the US
I'm looking to put together a light duty gun. Something for my girlfriend to use that is just getting into the sport.
I fish mostly in Southern New England. Visibility is generally bad to fair. Mostly fishing for Tautog. I shoot an omer excalibur 82. It works for most all of what I do. Haven't shot a striped bass over 19lbs. I thought a 75cm gun with 10-13mm bands and a 6mm single flipper coated carbon steel shaft would work well for my girlfriend. Its a little more maneuverable in the water, and easier for her to load/unload. But still enough power to get a tautog at 10ft which is generally greater than the visibility. Seeing as she may only use it once and then never want to do it again, I don't want to spend a lot of money. I found the Coralign Thazard Evolution 75cm w/ 12mm bands for $41.95 add a 6mm zinc flipper shaft for an additional $7.95 out the door under $50. Beautiful. Only problem is the company in is Europe. $70 to get it shipped here. That being said I think it is still the best price I can find for $120. Kinda sad that there isn't any product in the US that can compete. Am I missing something? |

Re: Complaining about a lack of inexpensive Guns in the US
There is a lot of force stored in a speargun when it is loaded, super cheap is not necessarily what I would want to put in my girls hand. If a sear or a tab or a mech or a handle fails it's not inconceivable that she could be injured. Not to mention if she does like it you've wasted the money on a POS and you'll need to buy a new one soon.
If Mako guns are too expensive for you work an extra shift or get a job Jeremy

Yes. Spend $100 more and buy a Rob Allen and have a gun that is tried and true without having to worry about components failing.

The stock shaft sucks and so does the stock wishbone but change those out with a good shaft, wishbone, and shooting line and it destroys small game I placed 4th in last year's PCC's and this in a 60cm was all I shot all competition day.

So you change the shaft, the bands and the shooting line and you have a decent gun....What does that cost? Do you have to add a muzzle bungi too?

Have you thought of just diving with the one gun you have and trading off every dive?

![]() But for an extra 50$ it's actually a great little gun for the price. $140 area is super cheap for a gun that works right.

Re: Complaining about a lack of inexpensive Guns in the US
A speargun can go wrong in so many ways it is not even funny. Good quality materials cost money and skilled people required to put these parts together will also charge a premium .... but that still is much cheaper than dental surgery or worse! Just like you wouldn't want the cheapest surgeon to do your open heart surgery, you shouldn't buy a speargun based on the cheapest possible choice. I would rather use a pole spear than use a cheap speargun.
