Sea of Cortez action when there is none!

So this is the time of year when most baja spearos head to the Pacific, well I can't be on that side easily and I still need my spearfishing hit!

So I go into the desolate sea of Cortez and hunt for the most elusive, yet plentiful fish, out there : the bar pargo!

Anyone tried fishing for them? Feels like fishing for dentex or scups in new england lol

Awesome video Rene!
I was in Vallarta las week and caught some nice red and yellow Pargo. The local guy I dove with used this trick of slapping water on surface before dropping and sweared that brought them up to shallower (20-25 meters) water. Have you heard of that trick?

Oh yeah, slapping the water can help a bit. Wiggling a white glove is even better. Thing is, the yellowtails are not here yet...

Nice barred pargo. Every time I see one it's running for cover! I've speared two, about the size you passed up on, caught one fishing and saw this guy pull one in,,,

I use the glove wiggling trick with yellows, but he was slapping the water for red Pargo (and caught half a dozen within 1hr). Then again, he dives daily so he would probably catch a bunch regardless.

Keep the videos coming, love your narrations too!

I'm no expert, but once diving off the coast of Baja, I missed a fish and while I was loading, this humongous wahoo came to check my dangling slip tip, hence a small shiny lure attached to tour speargun tip, may help. Good luck and keep posting your adventures.
Cheers!!

Sorry man, I don't have real insights. I have seen the Hawaiians attracting wahoo by throwing spoons (yes, soup spoons) and/or PVC pipes wrapped with fish stickers but I can't speak from experience.

Nice video, Rene! I would check that flopper as it seems that isn't opening correctly.

Regarding Wahoos, slapping the water brings their attention too. You can do it with your fins also. And yes, throwing and retrieving a stainless spoon will bring them closer when they show up.

Re: Sea of Cortez action when there is none!

I've shot a lot of Cortez wahoo, and having a throw flasher helps a lot. Hanging flashers also help, but usually all you need is a throw flasher. Here is a video on how to make an inexpensive one that works very well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2kq7HW_Y4A

If you can find purple reflector tape, that is the magic color for Cortez wahoo.

The less interested you pretend to be in the wahoo, the better your chances are of getting a shot. If you look directly at them or swim towards them, they usually shy away.

Man, I fixed the flopper but now this 8mm shaft is going all over the place now lol. Seriously, I cannot hit a bard door with it.
