All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective. |

Black Grouper
Grand Cay 7.10.11 46ft Followed him for a few minutes up current until he finally stopped. Dropped down on him and put a pretty long shot on him w/ the hawaiian sling. He hauled ass and rocked up. Put another shaft into him, still couldn't get him out. Brought out the 8ft Crist flopper tip aka "Bitch be good stick" and brought him up. |

Re: Let's See What You Got!!!!!!
Dove tamarack yesterday. Visibility was amazing over the eel grass easily 15 plus.
I was with a buddy of mine doing a fish survery and we found 3 abandoned lobster traps and countless bags filled with sand, really weird. Water temp was perfect, so much in fact that i was out until 7, ran into a few other guys other with polespears, who ever you were it was good to mee to you man. Visibility was so good i decided to concentrate all my efforts on finding a halibut, but all i found were countless rays and baby leopard sharks everywhere, i kept waiting for a larger model to come by but only the 1-2 footers were around. Long story, headed to the kelp, no fish only sargo and a few small sheephead. Headed into the surf and loaded up on spot fin crokers. Get out the before the weather changes. water temp 70 Visibility 15 plus Gear used, Ray odor 6ft flounder special Game seen sargo, rubberlip, sandbass, leopard sharks, crokers and corbina. Re: Let's See What You Got!!!!!!
"Science is a cruel master" This is hardly impressive, except maybe for the number of fish speared in one hour. There were also some very small fish I hid in my wetsuit top. My dive yesterday was in 11 degree C (that is 52 F) water near Auckland, targeting reef fish for scientific analysis, using the harbourmaster's boat. The city council have dropped rat poison on the adjoining park area behind the new predator proof fence, and need to confirm none is making it into the marine food chain. The scuba divers collected some other stuff while another spearo (who works at the council) and I did the reef fish collection. I used my new Gat-ku 8 footer with the 3 prong tip. This was ideal for vis which ranged from 1 metre to about 2.5 metres. I was pretty happy to get 2 snapper and one kahawai in addition to the selection of reef species which we were asked to bring in. After 3 hours we had moved to water which was a tropical 12.8 degres C (55 degrees) - I was one very cold volunteer in my 5 mm suit!

Re: Let's See What You Got!!!!!!
Dove Cardff again on friday the 28th with my DFG buddy. Visibility was 5-6 feet at tops even worse at the kelp for some reason. We headed into shore and hung around the edges of the reef and i saw the biggest leopard shark ive seen in a while, had her lined up 3 times far a shot but the size alone kept me from taking her down. Ended up with a few crokers in the surf just before 7, water was warm but the swell was picking up.
Gear used 6 ft Jbl fiberglass spear. Fish speared Spotfin crokers to about 4 lbs Game seen, leopard shark, corbina, rubberlip surf perch and small bass. MonkeyChunks everywhere so watch your step |

Re: Let's See What You Got!!!!!!
Had an amazing trip with Stevemc & Killer Kanuck in the Abaco's last week! We got some amazing fish with our Crist pole spears. I got a personal best 49.5 lb Cubera and a 34 lb Nassau. KK Got a 37 lb Black and a 24 lb Cubera. We also got much more but those were our biggest. We did use chum to lure them close because we had seen so many that we couldn't get close to. The conditions and weather were great and the captain and company even better . Here's a few pic's from our week!

Re: Let's See What You Got!!!!!!
Ryan, those are nice fish. Cubera on the polespear is no joke, solid work. I guess the chum brings them in better b/c they usually seem pretty skittish, and like to swim just out of range to F-with you .

Re: Let's See What You Got!!!!!!
Black Grouper 50+lb On 46 foot of water of Grand Bahama.
Shot the grouper with a hawiian sling (hopefully it is primitive enough for contest). Fish got shot on the back 1 time and took a run until he holed up. Went down to check on him and all I could see was a lip so I knew he was a big guy. He had shaken the 1st shot so I had to shoot him again through the mouth and that is when it hit the fan. Fish went crazy stuck my hand in the hole and wrestle him out. It was a blast putting him on the boat. |

Re: Let's See What You Got!!!!!!
That's exactly what went on for about an hour before I got a clean shot. Theses Cuberas were hungry because normally they are spooked easily. This one & a bigger one I would say close to 80+ kept circling. I guess being that big they felt dominant on the reef.
